Subject: Civil Rights and Social Justice Experience - applications open

Dear UTSA Faculty,

Please encourage your undergraduate students to apply for the Civil Rights and Social Justice Experience (by September 26th  at 5:00pm).  2015 will be the fourth consecutive year for this program, and the three previous cohorts have overwhelming expressed that the trip has transformed and substantially deepened their understandings of personal leadership potential and civic responsibility.

students on Civil Rights Trip

This five day co-curricular trip (January 6-10, 2015) immerses a group of 40 students in the history of the black civil rights movement and draws connections to current social justice issues.  We follow a purposeful curriculum which includes conversations with community leaders, documentary films, reflection journaling and group discussions. Students travel by bus, visiting five states and the following destinations:

·         Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans, Louisiana

·         16th Street Baptist Church, Kelly Ingram Park, and the Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham, Alabama

·         National Civil Rights Museum, Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum, Mason Temple, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis, Tennessee.

·         The experience concludes with students regrouping one week after our return to participate in the San Antonio MLK March.

Visit the Student Leadership Center website for more details and a link to the on-line application form. Help us make students aware of this opportunity, and encourage them to apply!
