Since there is the concern of an endless screen of holds, why don’t we create a colour scheme for each hold.  For instance, orientation hold –green; transcript hold – yellow and so on. By creating a colour scheme it is easier to choose what you are looking for on a computer screen.

Matt,

This is a great idea. Yes, the hold list become endless as we screen through them for advising. Plus, what will global pull in? Only active?

I’m wondering if there is a way to both follow this best practice and make it easier for advisors to quickly check active holds without having to look for end dates for every hold the student has ever had. Students often have 4 holds just from orientation (AD, OR, OA, & HM), and they accumulate more over time. While it is the student’s responsibility to know which holds are active on their accounts, advisors can often be the ones who alert students to holds. I don’t want any holds to be missed by an advisor double-checking a student’s record simply because they fall between two older holds in SOAHOLD. Is there perhaps another screen that could show only active holds? Would holds automatically be ordered in SOAHOLD based on end date or when they were added?

Lisa A is correct.  We made the decision to end the hold rather than remove it, as it is best practice to maintain that history that the hold was placed on the record and that it was ended.

Good Morning Lisa,

Thank you for your email.  This change was made by our Recruiting Information Technology administrator.  The short answer to your question is that outdating the hold is a best practice in data management because instead of losing the record you preserve the data.

This change is ALSO taking Orientation and Family Programs a while to get used so I understand your concern.

I’ve copied Jamie Trevino on this email, she is the Director of RIS and more versed than me about the specifics of this change.  If you have any further questions please feel free to loop both Jamie and me in.

Have a good day,

Holds really need to be completely removed, not just disabled by changing the end date.  When the hold is left on, it confuses everyone who looks at the record.

When Banner was started, I went through this, as I worked in the Registrar’s office at that time.

Does this same someone time?  Or money?  What’s the justification?

Good afternoon.  Orientation and Family Programs will no longer be removing the OR (Orientation) holds in Banner after a student completes orientation, they will only be changing the end date on the hold.  An example is below.  This is something completely different from what they have done in the past.  I’m told the reasoning is to keep a record of the hold.  We will have to make sure to look at the end date on these holds to see if they are active or not.
