Jump Start and Math Boot Camp

Summer 2016 Jump Start and Math Boot Camp Information

Would you like to sharpen your skills in mathematics? Would you like to increase your chance of success in college math courses?

For students whose math skills are a little rusty, The Department of Mathematics offers two programs: Jump Start and Math Boot Camp.

Jump Start is a faster pace program for students who took the math placement exam and scored just under the acceptable score for entrance into MAT 1093 or 1214.

Math Boot Camp is a slightly longer program for students who took the math placement exam and scored under the acceptable score for entrance into MAT 1073, 1033, 1023 and STA 1043, 1053 or if a student is struggling to pass the math portion of the TSI exam so as to be allowed to enroll in entry-level math courses.

Math Jump Start and Boot Camp programs are led by our Math faculty and their goal is to prepare participants for success in their future math courses not to simply pass a test.  The foundational knowledge that needs to be built or refreshed with the participants will be cemented during their time with the Jump and Boot faculty for years of success in their academic career.

You must have taken the Math Placement exam and not scored at a level you are satisfied with in order to enroll in Jump Start or Math Boot Camp.

• 2 1/2- Day Intense Mathematics Refresher
• Improve Your Skills in Algebra and Pre-Calculus
• Small Group and Individual Instruction
• Take Placement Test to Potentially Place into Pre-Calculus Or Calculus I
• Save Money and Speed Up Time To Graduation

Math Boot Camp

• 4- Day Intense Mathematics Refresher
• Improve your skills in Elementary and Intermediate Algebra
• Small Group and Individual Instruction
• Avoid taking expensive and Time Consuming Remedial Classes
• Speed up your time to graduation

Historically, over 50% of participants who have begun with a placement of MAT 1073 on the initial placement have improved by at least one course level often by two course levels into MAT 1214 through Jump Start.

What you need:

Housing/Parking Information:

IMPORTANT: You must complete the Rules and Emergency Contacts form prior to picking up your keys for housing.

• A score from initial UTSA Mathematics Placement Exam.
• Prior registration on ASAP for the event.
• Housing on campus most dates at $25.00 – 30.00 per night (see more information)
• Money for food on your own.

Jump Start Day One:

Days 1 and 2

• Instruction 9:00 am to 12:00 noon
• Lunch
• Instruction 1:00-5:00 pm

Day 3

• Instruction/ Review 9:00 am to 10:00 am
• 10:00 am- 12:00 noon Retest opportunity on the Math placement

Math Boot Camp Dates

• June 27-30
• July 11-14
• July 25-28

Math Boot Camp events are longer in length to facilitate extra material.

Days 1-3

• 9:00 am- 12:00 noon Instruction
• 12:00 noon-1:00 pm Lunch
• 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm Instruction

Day 4

• 9:00 am-12:00 noon Instruction
• 12:00 noon- 1:00 pm Lunch
• 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm Retest opportunity on the Math Placement

On the initial UTSA Pre-Calculus/Calculus Placement Exam:

If your score on the first 38 questions was Then you placed in
0-6	MAT 0203*
7-14	MAT 0213*
15- 20	MAT 1023,1033,1043,STA 1043,or 1053*
21-26	MAT 1073*
27+	MAT 1093
27+	and 8 or more from the last 12 MAT 1214

Need Special Accommodations?

You MUST submit acceptable paperwork regarding your disability accommodation needs to the Student Disability Services office at least three weeks prior to your desired test date.
