Sometimes students have a gap between the completion of their undergraduate degree and graduate work or medical school. This is a great way to fill the gap while
completing something worthwhile, and earning scholarship money.
Please pass along to any student that might find it beneficial, and my apologies if you have already received this.

Subject: Mentoring Job Opportunity for Graduating Seniors
Hello,
My name is Melissa, and I am a representative for the mentoring program, City
Year. If you are not familiar with City Year, we are a near-peer mentoring organization that hires young adults or millennials, ages 18-25, to help reduce high school dropout rates and prevent the cradle to prison pipeline.
We are constantly asking the question: "If kids who drop out are eight times more likely to end up in prison,
then do we open up more prisons.... or minds."
We have a lot of work ahead of us to close the achievement gap, especially in San Antonio. We are hiring full-time mentors, tutors, and community leaders in San Antonio and would
like to share the job opportunity with UTSA May graduates.
City Year Mentors (also known as City Year AmeriCorps Members) spend their 11 months of full-time, in-school service with K-10th grade students to improve their educational
outcomes and change their futures. The role is tremendously rewarding, but far from easy. They provide daily one-on-one and small group tutoring, run after school clubs, and organize service projects.
Before students embark on their career, I hope they consider doing a year of service to mentor youth. If your students are looking at first steps towards a career, or even just
looking at doing something different and meaningful, I'd love to chat to them.
Our main requirements are that they be between the ages of 18-25, have a high school diploma, and be a US citizenship/permanent resident. This is a paid position and
City Year mentors receive a $5,800 scholarship award at the end of their service term. Service starts in late July 2017 and concludes in late May 2018.
I've attached a flyer to give some more details on the position. If and when students would like to apply, then they can start their application here.
I hope your students consider applying and please don't hesitate to reach out to me at
mcano@cityyear.org if you have any questions.
Yours in Service,
Melissa
