Barbara,

Good Afternoon! I hope you are doing well. Would it be possible to send the below message to the advisors? It is about the NCB Developmental Education Program and how it can be an option for some of our students who are not TSI exempt for the summer and fall. The contact for the program is Carl Van Aacken, who is the coordinator for the program.

Thank you and have a great day,

Cyndi

Good afternoon.  With the recent update of the UTSA Developmental Education Plan (dtd. 18 Oct, 2013), the Non-Course Based (NCB) Developmental Education Program is available to students achieving a Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) score result within a few points of the minimal passing score.  NCB developmental instruction is coordinated through the Tomás River Center’s Tutoring Services and offers students developmental classes in the areas of math, reading and writing. These fundamental classes teach life and academic skills through individualized instruction in a small group setting in preparation for college level courses and includes the following Goals & Objectives:

·         Provide students enrolled in NCB the skills and knowledge to succeed in college level courses

·         Provide students with additional resources and encourage their use outside of the classroom

·         Provide students with the skills and knowledge to become independent learners

·         Provide students with environment that promotes active learning of course materials.

·         Develop and encourage the use of critical thinking skills within and beyond the academic setting

The enclosed table found within the UTSA Developmental Education Plan (Section VI.A.) lists the assignment criteria (TSIA scores) for students to be assigned to one of the following NCB Courses: Mathematics:  NCB Course 0200 (Math Review for TSI); Reading: NCB Course 0300 (Writing Review for TSI); and Writing NCB Course 0300 (Writing Review for TSI)
