Ensuring FERPA Compliance While Using Social Media
Tuesday, April 21, 2015| By: Timothy E. Gilsbach
Technological developments, including various forms of social media, present unique opportunities to educational entities at the secondary and post-secondary level to engage with students in a new way, but also present new challenges to
ensuring compliance with student privacy requirements. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and its implementing regulations impose privacy rules in an educational context. While educational entities should be careful to ensure that the use
of social media is FERPA complaint, fear should not prevent them from using these new tools. Educators can and do use social media outside of the educational setting and need to be aware of when doing so can be a violation of FERPA rules.
This session with expert speaker Timothy Gilsbach will provide a review of when FERPA is or is not implicated, and what this means in terms of using social media in the educational setting. In addition, this session will touch on
other areas of concern with social media in the school setting, including bullying.
This webinar will look at social media and FERPA from two perspectives. It will review what limits educational entities should and should not place on their employees. You will learn what you can say or can’t say on social media to ensure
that it is in compliance with FERPA. It will also review the benefits and possible pitfalls of a growing trend in educational entities to use social media as a teaching tool and what you should do to use this tool while limiting potential violations of FERPA.
Plus, it will review what policies educational entities should have to address both concerns.
