Subject: Non Course Based Success Program for TSI Students in Math, Reading & Writing

All,

We still have many seats available in all three of our programs: the Integrated Reading/Writing for TSI, the Basic Math for TSI, and the Intermediate Math for TSI (sections in attached flyer).    It would be great if you could forward this email to your advising teams.

The course pairing program has only 2 students enrolled in the Integrated Reading and Writing program and there are currently none in the math program.  With more than 60 TSI non-compliant students in reading/writing and over 200 in the math this spring, there could be a number of students that are eligible and would benefit from this option.  For the Integrated Reading and Writing Pairing Program, if any student attended WRC 0203 during the fall semester and achieved a “D” resulting in receiving no credit for the semester, we would seriously consider this student for the co-enrollment option.

Also, there are still plenty of seats available for the College Success Seminar, which provides students with techniques, resources, and information necessary to improve their success in college.  The seminar is designed to increase students’ persistence and success in college by providing them with the academic, personal, and life management tools needed to function effectively within an academic setting.  Sessions are open to all students enrolled in UTSA and classes are offered both spring and fall semester as a one credit course.

Subject: Non Course Based Success Program for TSI Students in Math, Reading & Writing

All,

Good afternoon.  As we prepare for the upcoming spring semester, we wanted to send a quick reference email for use as you work with assisting any students that are non TSI compliant.  We still have many seats available in all three of our programs: the Integrated Reading/Writing for TSI, the Basic Math for TSI, and the Intermediate Math for TSI (sections in attached flyer).    It would be great if you could forward this email to your advising team.  For any new team members, the following is a quick overview of the NCB Program:

·       Assist students to become college ready in reading, writing, or math

·       A holistic approach to skill building based on an Individual Success Plan consisting of a combination of small interactive classes and specialized tutoring.

·       There is no charge for the course or materials.

Placement:

Placement into one of the NCB Program Classes is based on a student’s TSIA score(s) as outlined in the UTSA Developmental Plan (pg. 24).  A student must be enrolled by their academic adviser.

MATHEMATICS       TSI Score 340-349                  NCB 0210  - please note new course number

                                  TSI Score 325-339                  MAT 0213

TSI Score 310-324                  NCB 0200 - Replaces MAT 0203, the Math Department is not offering MAT 0203 for the Spring 2016 semester

WRITING                 TSI Score 336-362                  NCB 0700

                                  TSI Score 310-335                  WRC 0203

READING                 TSI Score 336-350                  NCB 0700

                                  TSI Score 310-335                  WRC 0203

Mainstream or Course Pairing Option:

The Mainstream Option allows approved students to simultaneously enroll in NCB 0600 and WRC 1013 in the same semester; providing the opportunity to these students to fulfill both TSI requirements and complete English Composition 1 within one semester.  Please carefully counsel any interested students, that although this is a wonderful option for students, it is also a challenging option.  Students must be willing to commit significant time and effort to be successful with this option.  In order to be considered for participation in the Writing Component of the Course Pairing Program, a student must have a score of at least 353 on the objective part and a score of a least 3 on the essay part of the writing section of the TSI Assessment and a score of at least 341 on the reading section of the TSI Assessment.  Non-cognitive factors such as motivation as measured by the ACT ENGAGE assessment will be used as part of the selection process.

The application is attached for students interested in participating in this program. Please note that you will need to also sign the application and supply additional information.  Please send all completed applications to: TRC Tutoring Services for processing.  Selected students will be enrolled in the following specific sections of NCB 0600 and WRC 1013:

WRC 1013: Freshmen Comp. I        T/TH 1:00 - 2:15        CRN 29138

NCB 0600: Specialized Studies         M/W 11:00 - 11:50   CRN 30735     or

NCB 0600: Specialized Studies         M/W 12:00-12:50      CRN 30736

Enrollment in the NCB Program is a free, non-credit bearing course for students and successful completion of the course fulfills all TSI requirements.  As a reminder, when enrolling these students the registration shows a “1.25” credit hours listing; this is a system default to ensure each student is tracked and the university is reimbursed funding.

I have attached the flyer you received during our past semester presentation for your convenience. The flyer includes more information about this exciting program designed to help students achieve “College Ready” status.

Thank you for your assistance, please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions.  We greatly look forward to assisting these students.
