Howdy,

Please see the emails below concerning BBL/MAS courses that are being marketed to our History & Social Studies students that are pursuing teacher certification. Ethnic Studies courses, such as Mexican American Studies, have been approved for the K-12 curriculum. Teachers with the History or Social Studies certifications are the ones being approved to teach these courses. The BBL/MAS courses WILL NOT count toward any major coursework at this time, but can count in the core or electives. Social Studies students in particular have no elective credits, so their only option is to take a course for their core Art credit. BBL/MAS 2023 has been in the core art section for some time. MAS 2013 was just added to the Language Culture and Philosophy section in the 14-15 catalog, but our students are already satisfying this core requirement with other major courses.

We have spoken to Dr. Gregg Michel.  At this time, we are just recommending these courses to satisfy core curriculum or elective.  I have worded my email to clarify this. We do plan to cross-list MAS 3033 with Special Topics History on a semester to semester basis.

Dear Student,

You are identified as Social Studies/History major pursuing teacher certification.  We wanted to inform you that Ethnic Studies, such as Mexican American Studies, has been approved to be taught in the K-12 schools. The Texas Education Agency has informed us that Social Studies/History teachers will be eligible to teach these courses.  Discussions with school districts have indicated an interest in offering a course like Mexican American in the Southwest in their schools. We also want to make you aware of MAS courses  offered this Spring that would enhance your knowledge and capacity for delivering content in Mexican American Studies.  MAS 2013 and MAS 2023 satisfy core curriculum requirements. MAS 3033 is taught from historical perspective and can be taken as an elective. The Mexican American Studies Program in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies is also planning a Summer Institute. For more information about Spring or Summer, please contact, Dr. Marie Miranda (marie.miranda@utsa.edu).

Hello Dr. Flores,

It’s good to hear that these topics will be taught in the public schools.  I wanted to make sure that this information has been shared with the History Department for approval.  There are a list of categories that have to be followed for the History (Social Studies) majors and the list is approved by Dr. Gregg Michel, Department Chair for History.  We have an advisor in the Arts & Humanities Advising Center who updates the categories list and sends it for approval to Dr. Michel before we are allowed to recommend courses to the students.  I have attached the currently approved list for your reference.

Also, will the MAS courses be cross-listed with HIS courses in the future?

Best regards,

Amanda M. Flores

Sylvia,  which of the advisors works with Social Studies/History teacher certification students?

We want to inform the advisor and students that Ethnic Studies, such as Mexican American Studies, has been approved to be taught in the K-12 schools. TEA has informed us that Social Studies/History teachers will be eligible to teach these courses.  We also want to make these students are aware of MAS courses that we are offering this Spring and a Summer Institute that would enhance their knowledge and capacity for delivering content in Mexican American Studies.
