Dear Colleagues,

UTSA once again has an opportunity observe the upcoming National First-Generation College Celebration on Friday November 8th.  The email below provides information about the First-Generation & Transfer Student Center celebration event as well as ideas for how Roadrunners across our campuses might participate in the larger national celebration.

Of special note this year, UTSA was recently named as a First Forward Advisory university by the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) Center for First-Generation Student Success in recognition of our programming efforts to create a supportive and empowering campus for first-generation students. If you would like to learn more about the First Forward initiative or other first-generation programming offered through the First-Generation & Transfer Student Center please contact us at:

Subject: National First-Gen Day Nov 8th

Dear UTSA Community Partners,

The UTSA First-Generation & Transfer Student Center team would like to extend an invitation to faculty, staff, students, departments and offices across our campuses to join us in the National First-Generation College Celebration on Friday, November 8, 2019.

In 2017, the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and the NASPA Center for First-Generation Student Success launched the inaugural First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965.  National First-Generation College Celebration day seeks to celebrate, empower, and support our first-generation community.  In fact, since that inaugural year in 2017, UTSA Roadrunners across our campuses have been a vital and visible part of this national celebration.  As a Hispanic-thriving, multicultural institution, UTSA is enriched by first-gen students, faculty, and staff who bring diverse experiences, backgrounds, and assets to our community.  There are many ways that we can celebrate the success of first-generation college students, faculty, and staff. A few examples include:

·       Attend the celebration on Friday anytime between 10:00am to 1:00pm. If you would like to share your first-generation student, faculty, or staff journey testimonial during this celebration, please contact Crystal Martinez at crystal.martinez@utsa.edu to sign up.

·       Encourage your students and colleagues to attend the celebration event and post the attached eflyer on your social media. There will be food, first-generation journey testimonials, opportunities to network and connect with other first-generation Roadrunners, and UTSA first-gen pride swag while supplies last.

·       Wear your First-Gen T-Shirt and take photos of yourself with other first-gen faculty, staff, and/or students. Post them via social media using both #FirstGenUTSA and #CelebrateFirstGen! hashtags to add your voice to the national conversation.  If you don't have a UTSA First-Gen T-Shirt yet, you can pick one up at the celebration on Friday or drop by the First-Gen & Transfer Student Center located in FLN 3.02.04 this week.

·       Faculty can take a brief moment at the beginning of classes that day to celebrate their first-generation students and highlight UTSA's identity as a university where nearly half of our undergraduate students will be the first in their family to earn a bachelor's degree.

·       Pick up a UTSA First-Gen Faculty, First-Gen Staff or First-Gen Champion Plaque at the celebration or from the First-Gen & Transfer Student Center located in FLN 3.02.04. Proudly display your first-gen pride on your office door or desk and share your first-generation story with students and colleagues.

·       Departments and programs are encouraged to profile their outstanding first-generation students, faculty and/or staff on social media using both #FirstGenUTSA and #CelebrateFirstGen! hashtags.

·       Check out the 101 Ways to Celebrate on Nov 8! blog for more ideas and contact the First-Generation & Transfer Student team for additional information about initiatives and upcoming events that connect, serve and celebrate first-generation students at UTSA.

We hope you are able to join the celebration!

Sincerely,
