Spotlight:
Horowitz
provides plenary address at NABE conference
Dr. Rosalind Horowitz, professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, was invited to give a Plenary Address at the National Association of Bilingual Education (NABE) Conference by the Research and Evaluation SIG in Chicago. Her presentation
was entitled, “Toward a rhetorical theory of oracy in literacy. Multilingual, multi-cultural, multi-national contextual considerations,” and began a day-long series of international talks on orality and literacy in bilingual/multilingual education.

The Guadalupe Harber Scholarship and The Rodolfo Jacobson Scholarship - Undergraduate students seeking bilingual teaching certificate. Must be a member of BESO
The Harold T. and H. Joyce Cook Scholarship - Undergraduate students pursuing an IDS degree seeking teacher certification at the elementary (EC-6th or 4-8) level. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and Financial Need.
The COEHD Presidential Scholarship - Incoming Freshmen and undergraduate students – Full-time and COEHD majors only. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
The Carol Fitzgerald Dodge Scholarship - Undergraduate or post-baccalaureate students seeking teacher certification at the middle school and high school levels in the following areas: Language Arts, Math, Science, and Foreign Languages. Minimum cumulative
GPA of 3.0 and Financial Need.
Dr. Arcadia Lopez Endowed Scholarship - Undergraduate or post-baccalaureate students seeking teacher certification in Bilingual Education.
The Angie Martinez Memorial Scholarship - Undergraduate students pursuing an IDS degree seeking teacher certification at the elementary (EC-6th or 4-8) level. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and Financial Need.
The Jodie W. McCarley Scholarship for Future Coaches of Female Athletes - Undergraduate students, Incoming Freshmen, and Transfer Students seeking a B.S in Kinesiology with Teacher Certification and emphasis in P.E. with intent of becoming
a coach of female athletes.
The Albar Pena Memorial Scholarship – Undergraduate students seeking bilingual teaching certificate; member of BESO.
The Endowed Pythagoras Scholarship for Math Teachers- Undergraduate students, seeking high school Math certification.

The Dianna Lynn Tidwell Endowed Scholarship - Undergraduate students from a Bexar County High Schoolseeking special education certification. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
The Belinda Villarreal-Nelson Memorial Scholarship - Undergraduate students interested in becoming educators in the following areas: English, Math, Science, Bilingual Education, Special Education.

The Academy for Teacher Excellence Scholarship - Undergraduate students in their student teaching semester – must be a member of ATE TALC/TAILC and show financial need.
The Dewey Davis, Ph.D., First Professor at UTSA, Endowed Scholarship - Undergraduate students seeking secondary science certification, and in their student teaching semester.
The Onderdonk Family Memorial Scholarship - Undergraduate students from all teaching areas, in their student teaching semester.
GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

researchers blast Common Core standards, urge ban on high-stakes tests

More than 100 education researchers in California have joined in a call for an end to high-stakes testing, saying that there is no “compelling” evidence to support the idea that the Common Core State Standards will improve the
quality of education for children or close the achievement gap, and that Common Core assessments lack “validity, reliability and fairness.”

Mississippi
Might Grade Parents on Their Involvement

In an effort to increase parental involvement in schools, a proposal has passed the Mississippi House that would grade parents -- unsatisfactory, needs improvement, or satisfactory -- on their involvement in their children's education.
The bill came out of research and school visits conducted by legislators who realized how evident parent involvement is in high-performing schools (Mannie, Hechinger Report).

schools’ BMI screenings of students even work?

I remember opening the envelope holding my daughters' report cards from their New York City elementary school a few years ago and stumbling upon a fitness report. The so-called "FITNESSGRAM" tallied my daughters' height, weight
