COEHD faculty, alumnus publish book on multicultural literature

Drs. Ellen Riojas Clark, Belinda Bustos Flores, and Howard Smith from the College of Education and Human Development’s Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, along with alumnus Daniel González, co-wrote and edited a book on multicultural literature for Latino bilingual students. The book, published by the Rowman and Littlefield Inc., will be available for purchase in hardback, paperback, or as an eBook in December of 2015.

First Civic Engagement Summit call for posters

Center for Civic Engagement

The Center for Civic Engagement announces their first Civic Engagement Summit to be held on Monday, October 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the UC Denman Ballroom. The Summit is an opportunity to showcase and share the variety of community engaged activities of UTSA students, faculty, and staff. This will be a unique opportunity for us to celebrate our Engaged Scholarship as a campus community. The Summit is currently accepting proposals for poster presentations. Accepted proposals will present community engagement initiatives from UTSA’s departments/programs/organizations highlighting their purpose and impact locally, nationally, and/or globally. The Call for Posters is open to UTSA students, faculty and staff. The Call for Posters deadline is Friday, September 11th. Please share this information across your colleges/departments. As such, Texas constructed the Texas Athletics Nutrition Center (TANC) in the Red McCombs Red Zone of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. With its completion all student support services—academic, strength and conditioning and sports medicine—are headquartered in one central location, marking a significant step toward enriching the environment for more than 500 student-athletes.

Money spent on community-based HIV prevention translates into treatment savings

Every $1 spent on community-based HIV prevention programs in Ontario saves $5 in treatment costs, a new study has found. The programs have prevented more than 16,000 people from becoming infected with HIV over 25 years and saved Ontario's health care system about $6.5 billion, said the lead author.
