Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of U.S. Hispanic citizens whose ancestral roots date back to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. In the U.S., 16 percent
of the population is of Hispanic or Latino origin. In Texas, 38 percent of the population is Latina/o.

UTSA’s first faculty member, Dewey D. Davis, passed away Sept. 17 at age 86. A first-generation college graduate who specialized in science education, Davis worked at UTSA for 15 years but remained a fixture at the university until his death.
