COEHD professor elected chair of American Educational Research Association special interest group

Van Lac, an assistant professor with the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, has been elected chair of the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) Grassroots Community and Youth Organizing for Education Reform Special Interest Group (SIG). Lac has taught at UTSA for five years, primarily in research methods and sociocultural foundations courses.

BBL Department again hosts national Spanish language children’s book awards

The Department of Bicultural Bilingual Studies (BBL) is once again calling for nominations for the 2022 Premio Campoy-Ada, a national award for children’s and young adult books in Spanish sponsored by the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE) and UTSA. The award was conceived in 2017 by Professor Howard Smith of the BBL Department award-winning authors and ANLE board members, Alma Flor Ada and Isabel Campoy. Currently, the award is overseen by Isabel Campoy and Professor and chair of the BBL Department, Patricia Sanchez.

COEHD professor approaches advocacy, outreach through rock and roll

Tiffany Farias-Sokoloski is an assistant professor of instruction with the College of Education and Human Development. She works with clinical teachers, helping them prepare for their certifications, teaching courses, and organizing trainings and orientations. Those who know her from the lecture hall or the classroom may not realize that she’s equally comfortable on the stage. But the stage, she says, is what got her into the classroom in the first place.

In a recent video shared by North East Independent School District, Superintendent, Dr. Sean Maika highlights UTSA student Michelle Aliff and her mentor teacher Lilia Gutierrez- Kindergarten teacher at Woodstone Elementary School.

Professors receive $11K for ‘anti-racist’ preschool program


A pair of education professors received $11,000 to develop a preschool curriculum meant to teach kids how to fight racism. The American Educational Research Association gave the grant to the University of Texas at San Antonio Professor Zhongfeng Tian and Boston College instructor Alisha Nguyen.

Fronteras: San Antonio’s iconic West Side Sound is the focus of new oral history preservation project


A blend of doo-wop, early rock 'n’ roll and Tejano characterize the “puro San Antonio” sound of the 1950s — better known as the West Side Sound. Two San Antonio professors are looking to preserve the stories of the city’s West Side through the West Side Sound Oral History Project. Sylvia Mendoza is an assistant professor with the University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

Educational psychology professors win Article of the Year award for work in social justice


Associate Professor Felicia Castro-Villarreal, Professor Jeremy Sullivan, and Associate Professor Victor Villarreal from the UTSA College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) earned the award for their paper titled “Social justice training in school psychology through a university-school service-learning partnership.”
