More than $750,000 Given to Collaborative Research

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio announced the awarding of more than $750,000 in grants through the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute (SALSI) Innovation Challenge.

 

The Innovation Challenge funds collaborative studies, with a focus on public health issues and diseases of global impact. Funding will support early and conceptual stages of project development. Awardees in this grant cycle are studying immunity, microorganisms and cancer.

NSF Grant Writing for Engineering Disciplines: Presentation and discussion on National Sciences Foundation grant writing, with specific focus on the engineering disciplines.

 

NSF Early Career Awards Grant Writing: The NSF Career Award is in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholar  through the integration of outstanding research and education. This seminar provides an opportunity for UTSA faculty to receive relevant information on this NSF program, with specific focus on how to develop a successful application.

It's All About The Blast

Blast explosions have been the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition to being the primary cause of traumatic burns and amputations, blast exposure is the primary cause of combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). 

 

This presentation will review the symptomatology, etiology, and epidemiology of PTSD and TBI after blast exposure. It will also review the research opportunities at UTHSCSA and UTSA to examine the diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and treatment of PTSD and TBI in military service members and veterans.

Researcher Awarded NSF Grant for African Food Security

Eric Jing Du, assistant professor in the UTSA College of Architecture, has been awarded major funding from the NSF Interdisciplinary Behavioral and Social Science research program to complete a four-year research project about food security issues in West Africa using real-time simulation computer models.

Patently Great Inventors

Congratulations to UTSA Inventors whose patents issued! The average time from disclosure to a patent being granted is about 5 years.  Inventor participation is required throughout the entire life of the invention. OCI reviews for patentability and commercial potential, directs outside counsel in the preparation and prosecution process, communicates status to and seeks input from inventors and requires an investment of more than $20,000 is usually required for a US Only patent to issue.
