The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Center for Cultural Sustainability (CCS), housed in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning (CACP), recently saw the fruits of their labor at Mission San Juan in San Antonio. The National Park Service
hosted students from the New Frontiers Charter School on January 29 and, for the first time, began using research materials from the CCS project “Education Curriculum for the San Juan Spanish Colonial Demonstration Farm” as basis for the tour and lesson.

The San Antonio Writing Project, housed in the UTSA College of Education and Human Development’s Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, will host its ninth annual Teachers’ Conference from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, in the Frio
Street Building Riklin Auditorium (1.406) at the UTSA Downtown Campus.

Rachel Cannady is the new scholarly resources librarian for education in the UTSA Library. She is part of a team of scholarly research librarians that provide services to UTSA students and faculty across a multitude of disciplines.

University Life Awards

The University Life Awards, sponsored by the UTSA Student Government Association, is a UTSA tradition that honors the most outstanding students, student organizations, faculty, and staff members on our campus. From the colleges, the Student Government Association
will recognize an outstanding undergraduate and graduate student. Finalists and winners will be announced at the University Life Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 2th. Nominations for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students can be sent to Dr. Janis
Harmon (janis.harmon@utsa.edu).
In order to be eligible for the award, a student must be an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in the COEHD and currently enrolled at UTSA. The award is based upon academic achievement and involvement in the UTSA community. Completed nomination forms
should be submitted to me via email or campus mail no later than close of business Friday, February 20, 2015.

It’s time to recognize UTSA faculty and staff members who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to the university. The 2015 University Excellence Awards will honor those who contribute the most to UTSA’s success. Their achievement will be recognized
by The Rising Star Award, The Leadership Award, The Team Spirit Award, The Extra Mile Award, The Order of the Roadrunner Award, Richard S. Howe Excellence in Service to Undergraduate Students Award and the President's Distinguished Diversity Award. The recipients
of each award will be presented with a check for up to $1,000 and a plaque at the University Excellence Awards ceremony on April 16. There are many UTSA faculty and staff members who deserve an opportunity to be acknowledged for their outstanding work. Take

term “school choice” could mean different things to different people. This legislative session, the term will be used to describe plans that would allow parents to choose private schools and pay for that tuition with public education dollars. Critics call
that kind of choice a “voucher,” and in their view, those public dollars would be put to better use differently.

the urge to pull out your phone in class is quite difficult for many students, apparently. There are texts to answer, emails to read, snapchats to send, and rude comments to post on Yik Yak. But two students at California State University at Chico have created
something they hope will persuade students to keep their phones tucked firmly in their pockets: An app that rewards them with coupons for local businesses when they exhibit self-control and leave their phones untouched during class.
