The UTSA Office of Undergraduate is proud to celebrate National Undergraduate Research with an annual event sponsored by the (OUR) featuring students will showcase undergraduate student
research and creative endeavors from all disciplines across campus. The event is meant to increase visibility of and participation in undergraduate scholarly endeavors across all areas of academic inquiry. Such scholarly experiences enhance learning by complementing
classroom-based instruction, provide real-life, hands-on experience in student’s field of interest, and offer development of critical and independent thinking, creativity, and problem solving. This event will be live on campus, with multiple events happening
throughout the week.

Beginning June 2023, the UTSA RISE Program will hold a year-long Boot Camp, that will prepare a group of graduating seniors for their next steps towards a PhD.
Depending on engagement and willingness to travel, by graduation trainees should be eligible for admission to funded masters or postbaccalaureate programs, and within about a year of being
strong doctoral program applicants.

DEADLINE APPROACHING: Call for applications for NSF-funded
REU
site on Biomedical Engineering in Simulations, Imaging, and Modeling (BME-SIM) at ECU
The summer program will take place from May 13th - July 22nd on-campus. Program participants will receive a $6,000 stipend, on-campus housing, meal plan, travel to the Biomedical Engineering
Society (BMES) annual meeting, and reimbursement of travel funds (dependent on need). Rising juniors and seniors, students from
underrepresented groups, veterans, and students from academic institutions with limited research opportunities are encouraged to apply. Applications from community college students who are transitioning to four-year institutions or within a semester from
transferring are also encouraged.
Qualifications include US Citizen or permanent resident, major in engineering, basic sciences, math, computer science or related disciplines, and strong academic record.
We are currently accepting applications. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting mid-February until all positions are filled.

Research projects involve modeling and simulation of complex processes of transport of heat, mass, and electrical charge in configurations with micro- and nanoscale features such as structured
surfaces, nanopores, and microfluidic channels. Some of the projects will be in collaboration with Lyle School of Engineering.
Mathematics REU 2: Complex Systems
July 5- July 15, 2023
Research projects will center on modeling complex systems in the broadest sense. We will identify projects in diverse areas of applications in science and engineering.

GYNECA, The Columbia Undergraduate Journal of Gynecology & Women’s Health is accepting papers for publications from undergraduate students.
GYNECA is an open-access, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed publication that is supported by Columbia professors. We are looking
to not only fill the knowledge gap on the role that sex and gender differences play in health and disease, but also promote undergraduate student research in the discourse on healthcare. While our inaugural
issue sought to explore gynecology and gender minority health through a journalistic lens, featuring essays and editorials, we are looking to incorporate scientific research in our Spring 2023 issue.
We are currently accepting publications based on their originality, importance, and interdisciplinary interest from any field of research that is relevant to our journal’s aim and scope
that includes but is not limited to reproductive health, mental health, global health, family planning, breast/ovarian cancer, prenatal health, menstrual health, medical sociology, or another type of science. Each paper published in the
GYNECA undergoes a double-blind peer review process and a faculty review by the
GYNECA Faculty Advisory Board.

Upcoming Summer Opportunity at The Chung Lab at UT Southwestern (UTSW)
UTSW studies cancer biology and stem cells, with a focus on leukemia, other bone marrow cancers, and hematopoietic stem cell biology. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who
are passionate about scientific and/or clinical research. In our lab we leverage cutting-edge technology to study normal and malignant hematopoietic stem cell biology, with extensive use of mouse models of bone marrow failure and leukemia, as well as stem
cell transplantation assays. Individuals who join the lab will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with the rich community of basic and translational scientists at UTSW, as well as a team of medical oncologists specializing in hematologic malignancies.
This position also provides unique opportunities to gain experience interacting with patients and working with medical staff within a clinical and hospital environment.

Paid Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU):
Scientific Study of Interpersonal Relationships Across the Lifespan
The scientific study of interpersonal relationships over the lifespan is important to our broader understanding of the human experience. These relationships begin with our earliest interactions
and continue well into later life, and through them we learn how to communicate with, trust, and support others, as well as handle conflicts and negative interactions. These relationships are also studied through a variety of different social and behavioral
science disciplines, including psychology, human development, family sciences, and interpersonal communication. Increasing interdisciplinary insights into how close relationships and human social networks function and impact well-being across the lifespan
is important to consider in training the next generation of scholars.
The
University of Missouri (MU) is hosting a new National Science Foundation REU Site* centered on the scientific theme of Close Relationships. This nine-week on-campus summer program (8 students per summer) is centered on the interdisciplinary, lifespan developmental,
and diverse nature of the scientific study of close relationships. This REU site will take advantage of the collaborative and interactive research environment fostered by the
Family and Relationships Research Network of Missouri (FARR-net) at MU. Each undergraduate will be mentored by a primary FARR-net-affiliated faculty member from the departments of Communication, Human Development & Family Sciences, or Psychological Sciences,
to design a project related to one or more primary close relationships (i.e., parent-child, sibling, friends, romantic/marital partners) from a developmentally-informed perspective.
Who should apply?
Rising sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduates with interests in close relationships research and graduate study in any relevant social and behavioral science degree program from across
the U.S. are eligible for the program. We are particularly interested in reviewing applications from students who may not have strong research opportunities at their current institutions, as well as students who are either first-generation college students
or students with minoritized identities.

What does the program include?
The REU program site will cover admitted students’ travel to and from the University of Missouri, as well as campus lodging and meals for the entire 9 week program (Tue 5/30 – Fri 7/28,
2023). Students will also earn a stipend of $600 per week ($5400 over the course of the summer) while participating approximately 40 hours per week in: 1) research with an individual faculty member in their area of expertise, 2) participating in weekly seminars
on close relationships, as well as other areas of professional development (e.g., graduate school application preparation, competitive fellowship funding), 3) opportunities to present the research conducted, and 4) social programs sponsored by the

NSF-DoD REU Site: Advanced Technologies for Hypersonic, Propulsive, Energetic, and Reusable Platforms (HYPER) at the University of Central Florida
(UCF).
HYPER addresses challenges in aerospace travel and energy production, advancing the fundamental knowledge needed to overcome technical barriers limiting hypersonic flight. The 10-week
program will be held this summer from May 21st – July 29th, 2023. Participants will gain hands-on research training in challenges such as: utilizing advanced manufacturing techniques for high-value components, integrating in-site monitoring of stress-strain
evolution, developing novel methods for improved internal cooling and heat transfer effectiveness, and mitigating flutter through advanced rotor dynamic control. Many of these challenges rely on approaches that cut across disciplines and research techniques.
We are actively recruiting a diverse group of participants from a variety of universities. These students will:
• Conduct hands-on research guided directly by a faculty mentor and their graduate student(s)
• Interact with a diverse multidisciplinary team of researchers
• Visit the NASA Kennedy Space Center and various aerospace companies
• Participate in professional development workshops
• Gain in-depth training on numerical simulation software ANSYS
• Prepare for graduate school and a research-based career

Stanford BAD Lab Summer Virtual Internship Program 2023
About the Program
The
Stanford BAD Lab Summer Virtual Internship provides a student-centered, culturally-sustaining internship experience for undergraduate students pursuing research in Black language and
culture in the language sciences. This internship would support their pursuit of advanced research and graduate study in linguistics and education. Interns will gain broad training in quantitative and qualitative research skills, along with 1:1 mentorship
catered to their individual interests. Specifically, they will attend weekly seminars on fundamentals of research ethics, qualitative inquiry, quantitative sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and community-based participatory research. In addition, they
will work closely with Dr. Charity Hudley and a postdoctoral scholar or graduate student to develop an independent research proposal. Postdoctoral and graduate mentors will be from linguistics and education programs at Stanford University, UCLA, and UCSB.
The program will culminate with each intern presenting their work to an interdisciplinary audience.
