On Thursday, June 17, President Biden signed legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday, preserving June 19th as the national day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.

The name Juneteenth stems from June 19, 1865, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, TX which announced that in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation, “all slaves are free.” The recent designation came after years of dedication from organizers and activists who created the movement to get Juneteenth named a national holiday.

We at the College of Education and Human Development celebrate this recent designation by the President, but we understand that there is still much work to be done. We remain committed to educating the students, faculty, and staff at UTSA, the greater San Antonio community, and beyond.

Through our Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality Studies department and the African American Studies program, our faculty is committed to preparing students to act as agents of social change in academic, legal, and non-profit fields to work towards a more equal and just world.

By providing informative talks within the community and by creating innovative programs and teacher academies, COEHD continues UTSA’s commitment to being an institution expressly founded to advance the education of Mexican Americans and other underserved communities and ending generations of discrimination and inequity.

The San Antonio Writing Project will be hosting a digital writing marathon on July 27, 2021, as part of Write Across America 2021. SAWP will digitally host teachers and writers from across the US as they travel and write virtually.
