University Partnerships Office (UPO) Annual Program Opportunities and Deadlines

One of the benefits of membership in the ORAU University Consortium is funding opportunities available only to member universities.  The following is a list of UPO’s FY 2020 program/event opportunities and deadlines.  All programs are subject to available funding and expect to be continued for future years. Questions on any of these programs should be addressed touniversity.partnerships@orau.org.

Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards

http://www.orau.org/university-partnerships/faculty-student-programs/powe/default.aspx

The Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards provide seed money for research by junior faculty at ORAU member institutions. These awards are intended to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty and result in new funding opportunities. The deadline for applications for the FY 2021 awards is Wednesday, January 6, at noon EST. Each ORAU member councilor may submit up to two applications each year.  We will again be using ORAU’s PeerNet application intake system that makes the process easier and more efficient for applicants, Councilors, and ORAU.  The link to the intake system, along with further information and instructions will be sent out in the next couple weeks.

ORAU-Directed Research and Development (ODRD) Program

https://www.orau.org/university-partnerships/member-grant-programs/odrd.html

In light of recent budgetary impacts caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic, ORAU has made the difficult decision that 2020 Phase 2 ORAU-Directed Research and Development (ODRD) research projects will not be funded. We regret the impact this will have on our university partners, and want to emphasize that this decision was not based on a change in research priorities.

Strong relationships between ORAU and our member universities are of vital importance to our mutual success. Over the past few months, we have identified three areas for improvement that will enable mechanisms for strengthening ORAU collaborations with our member institutions and ensure better alignment with science and technology areas of strategic importance to ORAU as we look forward to FY2021. Further details will be provided in the next Listserv.

ORAU Events Sponsorship Program

https://www.orau.org/university-partnerships/member-grant-programs/events-sponsorship.html

Calls for proposals will be issued twice during ORAU’s fiscal year (October 1 through September 30) and each institution is eligible to receive one event grant award per fiscal year. Funding must be awarded prior to the event and all events must be completed by September 30 of each year. Cycle 1 applications are due March 1, 2021 for events occurring between May 1 and September 30.

ORAU's 76th Annual Meeting of the Council of Sponsoring Institutions – March 8-10, 2021

ORAU’s 76th Annual Meeting of the Council of Sponsoring Institutions will be held virtually this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The theme is Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and sessions will be held over several days. xTECH BRAIN OPERANT LEARNING TECHNOLOGY (BOLT) PRIZE COMPETITION

This e-mail is to notify the research community of the JPC-1, MSISRP  xTech Brain Operant Learning Technology – xTechBOLT – prize competition. The prize competition is designed to incentivize industry to develop and demonstrate the use of various cutting-edge imaging technologies to locate, track, and trace key learning traits that might be, in turn, developed to promote optimal retention and access to memories. The goals for this competition are to understand the effects of emotion and empathy on learning and memory and the functional roles played by various brain regions and their mutual interactions in relation to emotional and empathetic processing and effect on both implicit and explicit learning.

The deadline for the submission of a concept white paper and an accompanying short video is October 16, 2020 after which subsequent winners will be afforded the opportunity to pitch their specific technology in front of a panel later this year at the planned virtual Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education (I/ITSEC) Conference. The prize pool for the competition is currently allotted at one million dollars, with portions of the money scheduled to be distributed to winners of each progressive stage of the competition. The first-place winner will receive 500 thousand dollars in prize money as they embark on efforts to further develop their chosen technology.
