Limited Submissions AnnouncementA limited submission opportunity is available from The W.M. Keck Foundation and has been posted to the UTSA Limited Submission Opportunities webpage. The Foundation strives to fund endeavors that are distinctive and novel in their approach. It encourages projects that are high-risk with the potential for transformative impact. "High-risk" comprises a number of factors, including questions that push the edge of the field, present unconventional approaches to intractable problems, or challenge the prevailing paradigm.Supporting pioneering discoveries in science, engineering and medical research has been our mandate from the beginning. By funding the high-risk/high-impact work of leading researchers, we are laying the groundwork for new paradigms, technologies and discoveries that will save lives, provide innovative solutions, and add to our understanding of the world. Senior, Mid and Early Career investigators are encouraged to apply.Funding is awarded to universities and institutions nationwide for projects in research that:
- Focus on important and emerging areas of research
- Have the potential to develop breakthrough technologies, instrumentation or methodologies
- Are innovative, distinctive and interdisciplinary
- Demonstrate a high level of risk due to unconventional approaches, or by challenging the prevailing paradigm
- Have the potential for transformative impact, such as the founding of a new field of research, the enabling of observations not previously possible, or the altered perception of a previously intractable problem
- Does not focus on clinical or translational research, treatment trials or research for the sole purpose of drug development
- Fall outside the mission of public funding agencies
- Demonstrate that private philanthropy generally, and the W. M. Keck Foundation in particular, is essential to the project’s success
As a reference, below you’ll find feedback we received from Keck to consider for future submissions:• Keck looks to fund basic, fundamental science. Not translational or applied. Keck does not fund drug discovery, therapeutics, etc.• PIs must justify challenge/aspect that needs funding from Keck (or Foundation sources) vs. Federal agencies. What is the technical challenge that needs to be overcome that Federal sponsors will not fund?• Do we need this? What data will this generate that is not already known? The research outcomes generated need to provide a giant leap forward for the topic area.• If someone else has the same tools can they do this same research? Or what makes the project unique to UTSA or this group of researchers?EligibilityThe Lead Principal Investigator (PI) must be employed by the eligible institution submitting the proposal.Application LimitThe university can submit one Phase I application to each of these areas:· Research Program – Medical Research· Research Program – Science and Engineering ResearchAward Amount$500,000 to $5,000,000 (typically $2,000,000 or less).
