Subject: Week 1 of Black History Month at UTSA

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the first week of Black History Month (BHM) 2018 at UTSA! Each week I will share the flyers for the BHM events for the week. The brochure with the full schedule should be emailed to you this week as well. Please share with your departments, students, faculty, and staff.

As I mentioned in September, this is first ever non-student organization/student affairs offering of Black History Month at UTSA. The theme for 2018 is “I Am Not Your Negro,” based on the recent film about James Baldwin. As the Brackenridge Endowed Chair in Literature and the Humanities, I am providing funding for films, panels, and speakers (similar to what is provided for Women’s History Month).  I have partnered with the JPL Library, Student Health Services, the Creative Writing Speaker Series, and others to provide a full month of events.

The mission for this Black History Month is to recognize and celebrate people of African descent’s contributions and causes by: providing space for educational events from a critical and culturally sustaining perspective; promoting a commitment to diversity, excellence, and collaboration; and aiming to achieve social justice and empowerment.

Thank you to Interim Provost Mauli Agrawal and Dean Dan Gelo for co-sponsoring BHM with me!

I hope to see you all at the events. --sl

won't you celebrate with me
what i have shaped into
a kind of life? i had no model.
born in babylon
both nonwhite and woman
what did i see to be except myself?
i made it up
here on this bridge between
starshine and clay,
my one hand holding tight
my other hand; come celebrate
with me that everyday
something has tried to kill me
and has failed.
