high school student receives UTSA MLK scholarship |
Genesis Cogle, a senior at North East ISD's James Madison High School, was recently awarded the 2018 UTSA MLK, Jr. Scholarship. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Awards Ceremony was held at the City Council Chambers
on Wednesday, May 16. Karla Broadus, director of the UTSA African American Studies program, and San Antonio Mayor, Ron Nirenberg, were among those that presented Cogle with the scholarship. (Courtesy of African American Studies)

MAS Social Studies and Literature Teachers’ Academy |
Mexican American Studies (MAS) program at UTSA invites your schools to participate in our 2018 MAS Social Studies and
Literature Teachers’ Academy June 25-29, 2018.
The Academy engages secondary teachers in intellectually oriented readings, workshops, and discussions to increase content knowledge and pedagogical skills to integrate the Mexican American experience for Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in social studies
as well as meet the specific content area for Mexican American Studies as a special topics course.
In addition, the Academy will be held at UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures offering teachers a special tour to explore classroom resources inspired by ITC’s newest exhibit Los Tejanos. The MAS Social Studies Teachers’ Academy provides professional development
hours/credit.
UTSA is a campus on the rise! We believe in students learning their past in order to excel in their future. We invite teachers from your district to participate in this amazing one-week event.

To receive special education services, students must meet the eligibility criteria for one of the 13 disability
categories designated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004. To access services, predefined criteria from one of these examples must adversely affect a student’s academic performance to a “disabling” degree. These disability labels do
a disservice to students in a number of ways.

Schools To Offer Mexican-American Studies Electives with ‘San Antonio Flair’ |

As soon as this fall, students in Edgewood and San Antonio independent school districts will be able to take
a course dedicated to Mexican-American Studies for the first time. The new courses will touch on significant events in San Antonio history and cover Mexican-American figures who have played a role in the city’s history such as Juan Seguin, Emma Tenayuca, and
Sandra Cisneros.
