The African American Studies Program in the Consortium for Social Transformation, College of Education and Human Development launches
Beyond February: 2015-2016 African American Studies Lecture Series. The focus of this year’s lecture series is a critical exploration of African American education, culture, and life beyond the chronological timeframe designated for such considerations
in the United States.
The inaugural lecture for this academic year, Black Education Yesterday and Today, features Dr. Hilton Kelly and Dr. David Stovall.
Dr. Kelly, Associate Professor and Department Chair, Educational Studies at Davidson College, is a sociologist
of education, race and racism, and social memory with a research focus on the lives and careers of African-American educators in the United States. His current research project, however, examines the socio-legal and historical phenomenon of white faculty suing
black colleges for "reverse discrimination.” Dr. Kelly teaches courses in educational studies, sociology, and Africana studies, such as Schools and Society, Education in African-American Society, Growing up Jim Crow, and Critical Race Theory.
Dr. Stovall, Professor, Educational Policy Studies and African American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, , studies the influence
of race in urban education, community development, and housing. His work investigates the significance of race in the quality of schools located in communities that are changing both racially and economically. From a practical and theoretical perspective,
his research draws from Critical Race Theory, educational policy analysis, sociology, urban planning, political science, community organizing and youth culture.
The lecture will take place Tuesday, November 10, 6 pm in the Buena Vista Building, Downtown Campus. Students, faculty and community members are invited.
