COEHD Alum Named Bilingual Teacher of the Year

Laredo may not be far from San Antonio, but for UTSA alum Marina Lopez, the journey is measured in more than miles. Lopez was named Teacher of the Year at Krueger Middle School in San Antonio, where she teaches 6th and 7th grade math and science.

While 2020 was filled with unprecedented challenges, COEHD professor Zhongfeng Tian, Ph.D., remained dedicated to his education and career. His dissertation won second place as the AERA Bilingual Education Research SIG Outstanding Dissertation of the Year for 2021.

Melissa Williamson, lecturer in the UTSA College of Education and Human Development is lending her expertise to a special community summit on “How Traumatic Experiences Affect Learning.” In partnership with KLRN and Sesame Street in Communities, the virtual summit gathers local community experts to discuss how traumatic experiences can impact learning.

CLL Program Recognized for Admissions Innovation

The Culture, Literacy and Language (CLL) Ph.D. program received an honorable mention and $1,000 in the Innovation in Doctoral and Terminal Master’s Program Admissions award. According to Jorge Solis, Ph.D., the Graduate Advisor of Record for the CLL program, the award is part of the graduate school’s efforts to identify ways to better support its students.

BranchED announces the Emerging Research Fellows program participants


The Emerging Research Fellows program seeks to increase the number of scholars of Color and to amplify scholarship by scholars of Color, especially that which highlights the assets and supports the growth of Minority Serving Institution Educator Preparation Programs. Dr. Zhongfeng Tian is one of the 2021-2023 Emerging Research Fellows.
