UTSA researcher receives supplemental grant to study effects of pandemic on dual language students

Associate professor Becky Huang in the Bicultural Bilingual Studies Department (BBL), has received an additional grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on bilingual and dual language learning (DLL) elementary students. This award serves as a supplemental to Huang’s original 2019 grant, currently in its third and final year, which has enabled her to research language development in bilingual/DLL students.

UTSA COEHD Alum Janeth Martinez-Cortes, Ph.D. is the newest addition to a team of researchers assembled from a diverse array of departments within UTSA’s College of Education, College of Engineering, and College of Sciences. Joining the program  "Building STEM Capacity: Transforming STEM Undergraduate Education through Academic Literacy, Mentoring, and Professional Development", Martinez-Cortes offers unique insight on a nearly $1.8 million dollar grant awarded to the school through the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Program.

ILT students combat colonialism through art


Two students in the department of interdisciplinary learning and teaching are hosting a professional development workshop entitled Decolonizing Methodologies Through Art. The workshop will be held twice: in person on Oct. 16 from 11am-3:30pm at UTSA’s Downtown Campus, and online on Oct. 22 from 1-4pm, and is open to current and pre-service educators from all disciplines.

Every two years, UT System convenes the biennial tuition and fees proposal process. During this time, each university submits a proposal to the Board of Regents for consideration. These proposals support operational increases and university priorities, including student success programs, financial aid, and more.

Deaf Education and Hearing Science Program attracts $1.1 million grant from U.S. Department of Education


COEHD faculty Felicia Castro-Villarreal, Ph.D. and Jeremy R. Sullivan, Ph.D., partner with the Deaf Education and Hearing Science Program at The University of Texas Health Science Center to provide best practices based on research in preparing deaf education teaching professionals and school psychologists. Current UTSA students who are enrolled in the School Psychology program are eligible to apply. Interested students should contact Dr. Castro-Villarreal or Dr. Sullivan for more information.
