Hello all

As we are in the middle of Teacher Appreciation Week, we'd like to share this Brief on Addressing Teacher Shortages by The Education Trust: Addressing Teacher Shortages in the Short- and Long-Term: What States and Districts Can Do (linked and attached). This new resource provides state and district leaders with insight into strategies to better support teachers and address educator shortages.

Teacher shortages are not a new phenomenon, particularly in high-need fields (e.g., math, science, special education) and underserved schools. But the pandemic has exacerbated staffing shortages, due to fewer teachers entering the profession and a wave of early retirements and resignations. It’s not just that there aren’t enough teachers — in many districts across the U.S. there aren’t enough substitute teachers, mental health professionals, or school nurses. In some places, schools can’t provide meals to students because of staffing shortages. The hope is that you can use this brief to provide context as you ask state and district leaders how they are combatting educator shortages and ensuring that students receive the supports they need in the coming school year.

Please also see these additional resources that relate to the teacher workforce:

Ed Trust also has resources that discuss the impacts of teacher shortages and teacher turnover on student achievement, including:

  • Getting Students Better Access to Non-Novice Teachers (BLACK and LATINO) illuminate that high turnover has been a long-term issue for schools serving high percentages of students of color.
