Book no.1, The Evolution of Deficit Thinking: Educational Thought and Practice (1997, London, Falmer Press), is considered a ''citation classic." Book no. 2, Dismantling Contemporary Deficit Thinking: Educational Thought and Practice (2010, New York, Routledge) is considered a "widespread impact" book. It won the 2011 American Educational Research Association Outstanding Book Award, deemed by many to be the top national educational book award. This book also won the 2011 American Educational Studies Association Critics Choice Book Award.
