Proposals
now accepted for UTSA civic engagement summit |
|
|
All UTSA community members and partner organizations are encouraged to submit workshop proposals that enhance and build on the event’s theme, “Building a Civic Infrastructure
for a Changing Democracy.” Workshop topics could include civic engagement strategies, highlights of impactful community projects, civic participation technologies, community based research projects, and more. The hope is to share ideas, cross pollinate on
research and best practices, and ultimately energize our community to be engaged with advancing the public good. Proposals will be evaluated by a committee of reviewers and rated for their overall quality, qualifications of the presenter(s), alignment with
the theme of the summit, relevance and importance of the topic, and quality of accomplishing the learning objectives. Sessions are also selected to provide a balanced program with a wide variety of topics.

Nancy Gonzales and Janeth Martinez Shirley Brice Heath New CAE Scholar Travel Stipend Council on Anthropology and Education |
Nancy Gonzales and Janeth Martinez, two doctoral students from the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies were the recipients of the Shirley Brice Heath New CAE
Scholar Travel Stipend, sponsored by the Council on Anthropology and Education (CAE), a section of the American Anthropology Association. This award is offered yearly to 4-5 new scholars among the entire CAE membership and conference attendees. Both students
attended the conference this past weekend to receive the award.
Nancy Cecilia Gonzales was a bilingual classroom teacher for 17 years. Currently she is the bilingual/ESL coordinator and bilingual interventionist for her school. She is also a PhD student in the Culture, Language, and Literacy program at the University of
Texas at San Antonio. Her research is about mathematical co-construction in a two-way immersion dual language program. She is interested in how students come to understand mathematics in a bilingual setting. Her advisor is Dr. Jorge Solis.
Janeth Martinez is a doctoral student in the Culture, Language, and Literacy Ph.D. program at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is the current managing editor of the Association of Mexican American Educators Journal. Her research interests focus on
Latino first-generation college students and their academic discourse socialization, college persistence, and success. Her advisor is Dr. Patricia Sánchez. |

With the looming competitive threat of two new regional medical schools in the University of Texas System opening north and south of San Antonio, a growing number
of business and civic leaders are expressing support for once again exploring a merger of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff and City Councilman
Joe Krier (D9) sent a jointly signed letter on Nov. 9 to UT System Chancellor William McRaven asking him to formally consider the merger and to meet with them to discuss the matter. They hope to meet with McRaven sometime in December.

Facing increasing criticism over its special education enrollment benchmark, the Texas Education Agency this week told schools that they must provide services to all
eligible students with disabilities and that they will no longer be penalized for serving too many children. In a five-page letter, Penny Schwinn, the agency’s deputy commissioner of academics, advised school districts that a federal provision known as “child
find” requires them to locate and evaluate children who live within their boundaries who might qualify for services such as tutoring, counseling and therapy. “A school district’s failure to meet the child find requirements is a serious matter,” Schwinn wrote.

While many have spent the post-election weeks revisiting their copies of the Constitution to figure out exactly what a president can and cannot do, Texas legislators
have been practicing their own governing powers. Lawmakers around the state have begun to file bills that will set the agenda for the 2017 Legislature. Topics range from the use of fireworks in celebration of Juneteenth, to the compensation of prison inmates,
to the renaming of a highway in Dallas to honor former Gov. Ann Richards, all the way to regulations for oyster boats. While few of these bills will actually become laws, a perusal of the bills filed offers useful insight into how the decisions made in Austin
might affect our lives.
