Dear COEHD Colleagues,

I want to welcome you to the  2018-2019 academic year. As the campus fills with returning and new students (and their cars!!), I want to share my excitement about the efforts  that we are all engaged in that place student success at all levels our priority. Under the leadership of President Eighmy and Provost Espy, we look forward to a productive academic year filled with  a number of university-wide initiatives. The COEHD leadership team has worked over the summer, planning for the upcoming year, as well as  working to align our efforts with the university-wide  focus and initiatives. Over the summer we welcomed Dr. Norma Guerra as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, as well as developed a Faculty Assistant Dean model to build capacity for future leadership and distribute the important work in the areas of student success, curriculum, programming, and  assessment, and technology initiatives (please welcome again Dr. De Leon, Dr. Cordova, and Dr. Marone). I also want to share that Dr. Paul Schutz is now the Interim Chair of ILT, and I look forward to working with him in this role. 

We will continue to work to develop and implement  new procedures, align curriculum, engage in continuous improvement,  and  ensure that our students have exceptional and successful experiences. 

We have  a gifted cohort of new faculty, and you will have the opportunity to meet them  or learn about them at the college wide meeting this Fall. 

As we move into  the Fall semester, please stay tuned for opportunities to serve on the newly  developed COEHD Assessment Committee. The work of the Technology Committee, CAPCC, Diversity & Inclusion, Research & Development, and Conceptual Framework and Candidate Proficiencies committees will continue, with  the development of strategic plans surrounding identified initiatives. We are also putting together a student advisory board, to provide opportunities for student input and feedback.

This year also marks the implementation of the new budget model, and we will be  running it parallel to the traditional model in order to make necessary adjustments, etc. Additionally, we are  investigating developing a Shared Services Center model of administrative and fiscal services, working closely with HR  to determine needs, steps, and processes. 

We have entered into a number of innovative new partnerships, and  through external funding have the opportunity to add  clinical faculty who will be instrumental in the success of these collaborations.

I will continue the practice of 30 minute  appointments, open to all faculty and staff (the schedule will be forthcoming), and look forward to meeting with you all. We are also continuing to build on the Donuts with the Deans, giving graduate and undergraduate students the chance to drop in and meet  me and the Associate and Assistant Deans and share their experiences over donuts and iced tea.

College wide meeting: September 5, 8:30-11:00 am (Graduate Studies, Undergraduate Studies, Technology)

Donuts with the Dean: October 4^th (1604) ; November 15, DTC)

Jr. Faculty Luncheon: October 15 (location TBD)

December 12: College wide  faculty and staff appreciation meeting: Celebration of scholarship, teaching, and service (time and location TBD)

It is an incredibly exciting time to be at UTSA and in the College of Education and Human Development.  Thank you for the incredibly good work you do and your dedication to student success. I wish you all the best for a productive and successful Fall!
