Title: Can We Coexist? A Discussion on Religious Freedom and Discrimination

Brief description: American law and attitudes towards marriage, homosexuality, and gender have changed rapidly. Some celebrate the change and fight for even more; others lament the change and worry that religious freedom is being deeply threatened. Distrust and open hostility often divide these two camps. Does it have to be this way? Can we have a thoughtful, productive, and peaceful dialogue on these issues and move toward an agreeable resolution? Come join us for a discussion between John Corvino (Prof. of Philosophy, Wayne State), a prominent gay rights and gay marriage advocate, and Matthew Lee Anderson (ISR Resident Scholar, Baylor University), a Christian ethicist. Corvino and Anderson, though they disagree about these issues, are deeply committed to open and thoughtful dialogue using the tools of philosophy.

John Corvino (Professor, Wayne State) is a philosopher who writes and teaches on ethics and is a prominent defender of gay rights and gay marriage. He has written What’s Wrong With Homosexuality and co-authored two entries in the Oxford University Press’s Point/Counterpoint series: Debating Same-Sex Marriage (with Maggie Gallagher) and Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination (with Sherif Girgis and Ryan Anderson).

 

Matthew Lee Anderson (ISR Resident Scholar, Baylor University) is pursuing a D.Phil in Christian Ethics at Oxford University. His academic work is focused on articulating the grounds for procreative and parental rights, and countering anti-natalist arguments. He founded Mere Orthodoxy, an online journal devoted to faith, culture and politics and is the author of Earthen Vessels and The End of our Exploring.
