Frustration. Burnout. Attrition. It’s Time To Address The National Teacher Shortage
by  ERIC WESTERVELT - TPR Texas Public Radio | Pub: 09/22
The good news: There's an uptick in the hiring of new teachers since the pink-slip frenzy in the wake of the Great Recession. The bad news: The new hiring hasn't made up for the teacher shortfall. Attrition is high, and enrollment in teacher preparation programs has fallen some 35 percent over the past five years — a decrease of nearly 240,000 teachers in all. Parts of most every state in America face troubling teacher shortages: the most frequent shortage areas are math, science, bilingual education and special education.

UTSA to launch new goals for Downtown Campus’ literacy center
by  SILVIA FOSTER-FRAU - San Antonio Express-News | Pub: 09/19
In an effort to become a Tier One institution, the University of Texas at San Antonio is repositioning its programs to strengthen its role as a research institution, officials said. As such, the center formerly known as La Plaza de Lectura will be launched today as the Center for the Inquiry of Transformative Literacies. While it will continue its work to improve child literacy through tutoring and instructional training, the center will also focus on data collection and revamping its research team. “As a research center, we can funnel our resources not only into serving children, which we will continue to do, but disseminating our research that is helpful to parents and children,” said Misty Sailors, director of the center.
