The
University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has taken a giant step forward in its ongoing mission to support the improvement of literacy in the San Antonio area and across the State with the opening of The Center for the Inquiry of Transformative Literacies
(CITL). The center redevelops La Plaza de Lectura (The Reading Place), a pre-existing UTSA service center that provides services to children who struggle with learning to read, into a formal research center and consolidates the university's many literacy-focused
programs under one roof. |

Center for Civic Engagement and the City of San Antonio Challenge Grant Center for Civic Engagement |
|
Through the generosity of Councilman Ron Nirenberg and the city’s discretionary funds, the Center for Civic Engagement launched the COSA Challenge Grant last month.
This grant funds service-learning projects for students, groups, classes and RSO’s. The challenge is to do a creative community project that benefits a nonprofit agency and/or the population they serve in our local San Antonio community. Grant awards are up
to $500 per individual and a $1000 for a group project. Students, groups and organizations must have a faculty advisor and a nonprofit agency already selected for the project. Deadline is Sept. 30, 2016, or until all funds are distributed. .#UTSAEngaged, Twitter

Frustration.
Burnout. Attrition. It’s Time To Address The National Teacher Shortage |
by ERIC WESTERVELT - TPR
Texas Public Radio | Pub: 09/22
|
The good news: There's an uptick in the hiring of new teachers since the pink-slip frenzy in the wake of the Great Recession. The bad news: The new hiring hasn't made
up for the teacher shortfall. Attrition is high, and enrollment in teacher preparation programs has fallen some 35 percent over the past five years — a decrease of nearly 240,000 teachers in all. Parts of most every state in America face troubling teacher
shortages: the most frequent shortage areas are math, science, bilingual education and special education.

UTSA
to launch new goals for Downtown Campus’ literacy center |
by SILVIA FOSTER-FRAU - San
Antonio Express-News | Pub: 09/19
|
In an effort to become a Tier One institution, the University of Texas at San Antonio is repositioning its programs to strengthen its role as a research institution,
officials said. As such, the center formerly known as La Plaza de Lectura will be launched today as the Center for the Inquiry of Transformative Literacies. While it will continue its work to improve child literacy through tutoring and instructional training,
the center will also focus on data collection and revamping its research team. “As a research center, we can funnel our resources not only into serving children, which we will continue to do, but disseminating our research that is helpful to parents and children,”
said Misty Sailors, director of the center.
