Here are a couple quick but important announcements about AERA 2020 and news from members that may be of interest:

[1] The deadline for paper and session submissions to AERA 2020 isJuly 10, 2019. The call for submissions will be released May 10 and the conference will be held in San Francisco April 17-21, 2020. Seehere for more info on next year’s theme.

[2] The deadline to volunteer to review Division C proposals isMay 13, 2019. The quality of the program depends on researchers like you who help identify the most meritorious proposals and the proposals that will be of interest to the Division C audience.

Why sign up to review? In the past, reviewers have said that this process helps them to keep abreast of the newest ideas and research, provides insight into the review process to gauge what the community expects of an AERA proposal, and plays an important role in advancing the field.

Apply to volunteer following 3 simple steps:

1. Go to www.aera.net and log in with your username and password. You do not need to be a member of AERA to serve as a reviewer, you just need to have/create an account.
2. After you login, click ‘My AERA’ at the top of the page (if you aren’t taken there automatically), scroll down to the 2020 Annual Meeting and click ‘Volunteer to review for the 2020 Annual Meeting’. There you will find some informational questions.
3. The most important thing is that you indicate, when prompted, that you want to review for Division C (and which particular section).

 Reviews will take place during July 24 – August 30, 2019.

We realize that the most established researchers have the least time to review but you can still help out by identifying other, sometimes more junior, researchers with relevant expertise – If you cannot review this time around, please recommend a colleague.

[3] AERA Grants Program Seeks Proposals

Supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the AERA-NSF Grants Program emphasizes the advanced statistical analysis of data sets from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, NSF, and other federal agencies. The program also supports studies using large-scale international data systems (e.g., PISA, PIRLS, or TIMMS) that benefit from U.S. federal government support. In addition, statewide longitudinal administrative data systems enhanced through federal grants are also eligible for consideration. Proposals are encouraged from a variety of disciplines, such as, but not limited to, education, sociology, economics, psychology, demography, statistics, and psychometrics.

AERA Grants Program Dissertation Grants: AERA provides dissertation funding for advanced doctoral students to undertake doctoral dissertations using data from the large-scale data sets. The award provides professional development, training, and networking opportunities for students. Awards are for one-year, for an amount of up to $25,000. Deadline: Wednesday, May 15, 2019.

AERA Grants Program Research Grants: AERA provides small grants for faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and other doctoral-level scholars to undertake quantitative research using data from large-scale data sets. Research Grants are awarded for one or two years, for an amount of up to $35,000. Deadline: Wednesday, May 15, 2019.

The Ohio State University, College of Education and Human Ecology is hosting a series of workshops focused on quantitative and qualitative methodological issues with key implications for the protection of cultural identities, traditions and ways of life, June 24-27, 2019.  This Advanced Methods Institute (AMI), entitled, “In Support of Cultural Sustainable Research and Researchers,” will be held daily, from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, on the campus of Ohio State at the Blackwell Inn and Conference Center, Columbus, Ohio.  The goal of this event is to provide an opportunity for an open and challenging discussion of the ways in which research methods impact the cultural relevance and sustainability of scholarly research in the social-behavioral sciences. Faculty, graduate students, and researchers in the social sciences with interest in cultural sustainability can attend for one to four days.  Each day of the institute features two workshops conducted by expert researchers.  Workshops will build attendees’ skills, highlight issues relevant to research among diverse populations, and employ examples from data sets that address issues which are culturally relevant.
