COEHD faculty receive University Excellence Awards

Three faculty members from the College of Education and Human Development received University Excellence Awards during a special ceremony on Thursday, April 13, 2017. Dr. Amaury Nora, professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and associate dean for research, received the President's Distinguished Achievement Award for Research Achievement. Dr. Patricia Sanchez, associate professor in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, received the President's Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Leslie Neely, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, received the President's Distinguished Achievement Award for Research Achievement. Message from President Reyes on Campus Safety
Dear ’Runners,

As you know, over the past several days our campus community has experienced some disruption due to two threats that were made against the university. In both cases, there was no reason to believe that the threats were credible. However, our first obligation to you is to provide a safe campus, which is why we asked everyone to leave the buildings that were targeted.

We are working closely with the San Antonio Police Department, the FBI and other federal authorities to thoroughly investigate the threats and identify whoever may be behind them.

Sadly, incidents like this are not limited to UTSA. Unfortunately, this is a time of year when many people feel uneasy because of the anniversaries of American tragedies including the Branch Davidian siege, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the Columbine High School massacre.

At times like this, I urge you to remember, hatred wins when we live in fear. I refuse to let either one determine what we do as a university.

Every day, we maintain a significant police presence that includes officers in and out of uniform. These officers are here to protect you. Extensive safety protocols are in place and countless individuals work tirelessly to ensure that your experiences at UTSA are good ones. 

While it is always important to be aware of your surroundings, I urge you to go about your regular routine. Students, attend your classes. Faculty, teach your students. Staff, continue your important work.

We are strong when we stand together as the Roadrunner family. Nothing can change that.

The Origin of the Fiesta Medal

It's hard to imagine Fiesta without Fiesta medals. These days, anyone and everyone can create their very own medal. Over the years, collectors have traded thousands. But how did this Fiesta craze begin? Experts say that the famed tokens date back to the 1920's thanks to King Antonio of the Texas Cavaliers. "There was actually a worn medal around the neck that was passed down by King Antonio," said James Benavides, a communications specialist with the Institute of Texan Cultures, which holds one of the earliest known King Antonio medals, handed down to the new king each year.
