COEHD Updates

Dear COEHD faculty and staff,

Greetings and Happy November! I want to end the week on a very high note, sharing with you exciting developments and achievements in the college that speak directly to your commitments to making our shared aspirations outlined in the COEHD strategic plan a reality. At recent meetings with our COEHD Advisory and COEHD Student Advisory Boards, I shared high level data on our progress under each of the destinations – your investments are paying off and our stakeholders are seeing the difference. Below captures a glimpse of our recent achievements and success – so much to be excited and proud of.

COEHD by the Numbers

Grant Progress (since 9/1/2024)

  • COEHD faculty have submitted 6 proposals worth ~ $6.2M
  • COEHD faculty have secured 4 awards worth ~ $13M from funders including the Department of Education and the National Institutes of Health
  • COEHD Rowdy Writers, an initiative to encourage and develop writing in the college, had 17 faculty participants in the past month
  • 7 COEHD faculty members are current participants in COEHD’s grant incubator initiative. These faculty are actively engaged in developing granting skills through targeted mentoring.

Alumni

  • On a recent campus Thrive Quotient survey, COEHD undergraduate students reported:

1.    Given my current goals, this institution is a good fit for me

2.    I feel like I belong here

3.    I spend time making a difference in other people’s lives

  • COEHD strengths overall compared to other colleges:

·         Fostering academic confidence

·         Diversity awareness

·         Strong sense of institutional fit and pride

·         High levels of personal growth

·         High levels of problem-solving skills

·         Satisfaction with social interactions and support

Overall, students in COEHD rated their experiences the highest out of all colleges on campus – a tribute to your care and dedication. Thank you.

New Academic Programs

  • The online Bilingual Education Graduate Certificate is launching in January
  • We have several graduate programs in ELPS in the approval process to launch new hybrid modalities
  • We are currently in the approval process for a new interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Sciences, which we hope to launch next fall
  • Finally, we are excited for a potential partnership with HCAP for a bilingual concentration in the masters of public health degree

Alumni

  • 75% of graduate alumni are employed locally

Experiential Credits

COEHD ranks among the highest in the university when it comes to experiential learning, i.e., practicums, internships, clinical teaching, research, service learning/training, and studies abroad.

  • 80% of COEHD undergraduate students are taking experiential credits. COEHD had more bachelors grads who earned experiential learning credits than any other college at UTSA between FA 21 and FA 23.
  • This semester 242 graduate students are completing hands-on practicum and internships in the community and on-site clinics.

Teacher Certification

  • We have 446 students enrolled in the teacher certification program, 200 in grades EC-6, 38 in grades 4-8, 92 in grades 7-12, and 76 in all-level programs (such as P.E.).
  • There are currently 243 clinical teachers, with 75 in our residency model. Of those, 48 have paid signature residencies. Our residency model allows teacher candidates to teach, learn, and interact with PK-12 students, teachers, and administrators for a full year so that graduates are ready to lead their own classrooms and fully participate in the district community from day one.
  • We currently serve 18 school districts, and our residents are hosted in 7 districts: Northside, Northeast, East Central, Somerset, Harlandale, Edgewood, and San Antonio ISDs.

Study Abroad

  • 36 students participated in study abroad trips in the last year

As you can see, there is something very special happening in this college. We are changing lives every day. Let’s finish the fall semester strong! The future is bright. My gratitude to all of you.
