Dear Colleagues,
I want to update you on the development of the college /department level workload policy. As you know, in the fall 2019 term colleges were asked to develop a local policy that implemented the
institutional workload policy ( attached) . We created a college committee with faculty representation from all departments, Department Chair representation, and Associate Dean representation. Liliana Gutierrez is staffing the committee. The committee met
over the fall ,and also engaged their respective departments in providing feedback, asking questions, and suggesting additions to take into account discipline specific variation. Further clarification was provided by Dr. Shipley during the fall based on
feedback and questions ( attached) . By the end of the fall 2019 semester, the COEHD committee provided feedback on the policy . Currently, that feedback is being incorporated, and a draft document will be shared with the committee so that they may continue
their work in developing a policy that documents the full professional responsibilities of faculty and provides a policy that defines the ways that faculty workload is determined, evaluated, and implemented to meet university goals and foster student success.
Once the policy draft is complete, it will be distributed college-wide for additional feedback ( it is expected that department representatives continue engagement within the department as the policy continues to evolve) . Revisions will occur where appropriate
, and once all input has been provided and the policy is aligned with institutional guidelines, it will be sent for approval to the Provost. Once approved, the next stage will be align workload policy, annual evaluation, and tenure and promotion.
I thank the committee for their continued work on this, and I look forward to the further development of the policy.
Regards,
Margo
