San Antonio Life Sciences Institute (SALSI) Lecture Series: Medical Data Analytics and Visualization

Description: Based on the notion of the Digital Patient, the SALSI Medical Data Analytics and Visualization team will describe how they use advanced big medical data and develop 3D immersive models and computer simulations to support diagnosis, treatment planning, outcome prediction, virtual reality-based surgical training and optimal patient flow treatment.

Strategies for Success in Sponsored Research - Workshop

Description: In addition to developing their writing skills, grantseekers must focus on the relational issues that are key to success. This workshop features three interactive modules:

• Got a Match? Assuring your proposal is a good fit with a given grant program

is a critical first step. This small group exercise will focus on an actual grant program, and participants will assess whether a specific research idea matches what the sponsor wants to fund.  

• Can We Talk? Contacting Grant Program Officers. Experienced grant writers know that communicating with the sponsor agency prior to writing the proposal  is a critical first step. This session will provide tips for planning and conducting a productive dialogue with a grant program officer.
• Proposal Evaluation: Grant Reviewer Exercise. In this session, participants will act as a mock review panel, reading and evaluating a sample grant proposal. The intent is to help grant writers understand what reviewers are looking for and how meet to those expectations.

Successful proposals are written by investigators who combine sound principles of grant writing with an understanding of NSF’s overall merit review process. This workshop will focus on critical aspects of interacting with the agency as well as proven techniques for effective writing in each section of the NSF grant proposal.

Writing Proposals to the U.S. Department of Education - Workshop

Description: Of the wide range of grant programs offered by the US Department of Education, a select few are targeted to university-based researchers. This session will focus on funding tracks within key DoE divisions such as the Institute of Educational Sciences (IES), the Office of Innovation and Improvement (OII), and the Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE).  Guidance will be provided on locating current and future funding opportunities, eligibility requirements, proposal structure, and DoE grant review procedures. Excerpts from successful proposals will be examined as models for preparing key sections.

Writing Successful Grants – Beginners Workshop

Description: For those who are new to the grant game, this introductory workshop covers basic principles of good grant writing, starting with the phrasing of a compelling research theme to the actual construction of the proposal itself. Major differences between traditional "academic prose" and persuasive grant writing are highlighted. Common pitfalls that can lead to early rejection of good ideas are reviewed, matched with practical strategies for better writing. Special attention will be paid to the perspectives of grant reviewers and how to write in ways that will meet their expectations.

Write Winning Grant Proposals – A One-day Seminar

Description: This seminar will comprehensively address both practical and conceptual aspects that are important to writing competitive grant proposals. It is appropriate for faculty members, postdoctoral researchers and administrative staff who have had some exposure to writing grant applications, either through training / mentoring or personal experience. Emphasis is given to doing the 'extra' things that can make the difference between success and failure, such as demanding that the idea yield a vertical advance in the applicant's field when acted upon; identification of the most appropriate granting agency for the idea, including whether the idea is relevant to an agency's priorities - or not; use of an agency's review criteria to inform writing of the application; and practical understanding of tips and strategies that are of proven value in presenting an investigator's project to reviewers.
