Award-winning educator visits UTSA

Dr. Jerome Harste, award-winning educator and professor emeritus at Indiana University, spoke to local San Antonio teachers and members of the San Antonio Writing Project (SAWP) about art and writing at the UTSA Downtown Campus on Saturday, February 7. The talk was part of SAWP’s Teacher’s Conference, an annual event that brings together local educators, SAWP members, and UTSA faculty and students.



UTSA to host 11th annual Storytelling Festival

The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) will host the 11th annual Storytelling Festival from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 in the Main Building on the Main Campus.



SAWP grant helps improve writing in high needs schools

For the last six months, the San Antonio Writing Project (SAWP) has been working with middle and high school teachers in the Harlandale and South San Antonio Independent School Districts to improve student writing. The initiative is part of the Write for Texas grant SAWP received from The University of Texas at Austin through the Texas Education Agency for $360,000.



UTSA to host the inaugural Global LEAD Summit Mar. 26

The University of Texas at San Antonio will host the inaugural Global Latino Education Advocacy Days (LEAD) Summit on Thursday, Mar. 26, at 9 a.m. in the H-E-B University Center Ballroom on the Main Campus. The event is free and open to the public.



UTSA to host 16th annual Texas Foreign Language Education Conference Feb. 20-21

The UTSA Texas Foreign/Second Language Education Student Organization will host the 16th annual Texas Foreign Language Education Conference (TexFLEC) Feb. 20-21 at the UTSA Main Campus. This is the first year that UTSA has hosted the event.



COEHD Associate Professor Abraham DeLeon publishes book on machines

Dr. Abraham DeLeon, associate professor in the College of Education and Human Development’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, published a book on machines this past January with Information Age Publishing.



House Bill 5: Aligning Industry and Education

Education reform in Texas has a new friend in high places. Newly-elected Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick was one of the original authors of House Bill 5 (HB-5), along with state Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock (R- Kileen). The bill, which was passed in 2013, brings serious changes to current public school curriculum, campus and district accountability, and testing requirements. On February 4, UTSA held a superintendent’s symposium to discuss HB-5 and what it means for San Antonio’s public education system and the students it serves.

Horowitz recognized for contributions to undergraduate and graduate students

Dr. Rosalind Horowitz was recognized for her outstanding contributions to undergraduate and graduate students at The University of Texas at San Antonio's Ambassador’s Amber Dinner. Student ambassadors honored one faculty or staff member who had contributed to their growth or inspired them during their years as a student by speaking of the meaningful relationships and the impact each honoree had on their lives.

Texas Association for Counselor Education and Supervision

The Texas Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (TACES) recognized three College of Education and Human Development faculty and students for their outstanding performance during the association's mid-winter conference. Award winners were Dr. Thelma Duffey, Outstanding Counselor Educator; Dr. Heather Trepal, Outstanding Advocacy Award; and Angellica Tello, Outstanding Graduate Student Award.


Styck garners SERA Outstanding Paper Award

Southwest Educational Research Association

Dr. Kara M. Styck, Assistant Professor in COEHD's Department of Educational Psychology, along with Grant Morgan, Baylor University, was awarded the 2015 Southwest Educational Research Association's Bruce Thompson Outstanding Paper Award.


Flores awarded AERA Hispanic SIG Award

American Education Research Association

Dr. Belinda Flores, Professor and Chair of the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, is to be honored with the 2015 Hispanic Research Issues SIG (Special Interest Group) Elementary, Secondary, and Postsecondary Award by the American Education Research Association (AERA).
