Anti-cyberbullying activists wanted a Texas law with “teeth.” They may have gotten one.
by  KIRBY WILSON - The Texas Tribune | Pub: 09/14
Just months after her son David took his own life, Maurine Molak began to organize. She and her husband, Matt, who live in San Antonio, founded David’s Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to cyberbullying victim advocacy. Maurine said they met with lawmakers, law enforcement officials, district attorneys, school administrators, school board presidents, mental health providers and school counselors. Their goal: legislation that might prevent future cyberbullying-related suicides in Texas. On June 9, Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 179, also known as "David’s Law." In some ways, it was not the legislation the Molaks had originally envisioned, but Maurine said it is a good start.
City and County Invest in CAST Tech
by  BEKAH MCNEEL - The Rivard Report | Pub: 09/13
CAST Tech, San Antonio ISD’s new technology-focused high school, has garnered support from private sector companies inspired by the innovation at work in the industry-led curriculum. Now the City of San Antonio and Bexar County have each contributed $250,000 to the school, which promises to serve as a talent generator for the tech community. Councilman Roberto Treviño (D1) joined district officials at CAST Tech on Tuesday to announce the gift on behalf of the City. Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff made the commitment on the County’s end. “The CAST [Tech] school has an opportunity to change the dynamics of education,” Wolff said.
Creating a Culture of Health for SA’s Latino Children
by  AMELIE G. RAMIREZ - The Rivard Report | Pub: 09/13
Did you know that Latino children are far more likely than their peers to suffer from depression and other mental health issues that often go untreated? This has big implications for San Antonio, which has a majority Latino population. Our new research review, Salud America! Mental Health & Latino Kids by our Salud America! national network for healthy change at UT Health San Antonio, examines the latest science on the state of mental health among Latino children and shares policy recommendations.
COUNTERING DISPARITIES IN HEALTH CARE FOR SEXUAL MINORITY WOMEN
by  ALETA BALDWIN - Scholars Strategy Network | Pub: 09/11
Health disparities – differences in the health status of different groups of people – do not simply occur by chance. Instead, they result from interactions among many factors, including public policies, access to resources, cultural beliefs influencing medical care, individual behaviors, and genetics. Because health patterns have complicated sources, solutions to disparities in healthcare access and outcomes are rarely simple.
Bernal was a leader in bicultural studies
by  MARY MILLS HEIDBRINK - San Antonio Express-News | Pub: 09/11
A pioneer in the field of bicultural and bilingual studies, Bernal “felt that everyone was carrying a treasure trove of information inside of them,” said his wife, poet Carmen Tafolla. “His whole interest was in seeing the potential a human being had.” An educator for almost 50 years, Bernal was once told by the principal of a small South Texas school that there were “no gifted kids in this school — they are all Mexican,” Tafolla said. He proved the principal wrong. Publishing “Gifted Mexican-American Children: An Ethno-Scientific Perspective” in 1974, Bernal “changed the face of education, of what it meant to be Latino,” Tafolla said. Bernal continued that work throughout his life. He died at 79 on Sept. 1 of complications of Parkinson’s disease. As a professor and researcher at the University of Texas at San Antonio, “he laid the foundation for bilingual education as we know it,” said longtime friend and colleague Roberto Milk.
