Subject: OSAP Guidance During Closure (and research opportunities links)

Dear Colleagues, Researchers, and PIs,

Please read the information below from the Office of Sponsored Projects regarding their actions in response to federal research restrictions and guidelines.

Below is a list of guidance that UTSA-VPREDKE will be following the OMB direction and will work with our PIs/Researchers to take advantage of this guidance during closure.

  1. The Office of Sponsored Projects Administration (OSPA) and the Office for Research Support (ORS) will assess all upcoming proposal deadlines, seeking input from PIs on their ability to meet current deadlines. In cases where PIs are hindered due to the COVID-19 event, we will request deadline extensions.

  1. The Office for Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) will assess all upcoming proposal deadlines on large, institutional proposals, such as the NIH Research Centers and Minority Institutions (RCMI) program. Deadline extensions will be requested where necessary.

  1. The Office for Research Support will scan funded grants at UTSA and associated PIs to assess opportunities to request funds on current awards to support COVID-19 related research. This has already been done with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) award under Dr. Bernard Arulanandam, where a funding reallocating of $96K and a new request for additional funds of $100K was submitted last week to DHS S&T for COVID-19 modeling research with Dr. Dhireesha Kudithipudi.

  1. ORS and SRI will assess current federal and state funding opportunities and will mobilize PIs and teams where possible to pursue new funding for COVID-19 research and other programming.

The OSAP are handling business as usual and will be sharing throughout the days ways to ensure they are supporting the researchers and faculty during this time of transition.

Also note these websites for COVID-19 specific research opportunities. I’ve already asked you to send us information about COVID-19 related research we can help you try to secure funding for, but also note that there are some expedited means of funding such research:

and, federal funding:

And local funding:

VPREDKE has created the Research UTSA COVID-19 webpage consisting of the latest guidance from UTSA and sponsoring agencies. This page is updated regularly and highlights the latest statements.
