The Faculty and Staff at the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) at UTSA stand together in solidarity with members of the black community, our
black students, staff and faculty. Communities across the nation are expressing their exhaustion with the systemic racism and oppression in our nation and we are dedicated to being a part of the solution. Inclusivity, equity, and social justice are at the
forefront of our mission and is the driving force behind our goal of providing the necessary training and knowledge to our future educational leadaers.
COEHD has a dedicated history of preparing transformational educators through core values that begin with a commitment to social justice. That commitment is growing with the recent addition of the
Department
of Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (REGSS). Born from student, community, and university faculty
activism, this newly formed department is committed to working with students, community, staff, and faculty to strive towards equality and social justice within the university and society as a whole.
We truly believe that through education, knowledge and open conversations, we can make change and begin to heal. The important discussions and teachings of African American studies provided through the faculty at REGSS are important now, more than ever. REGSS
faculty and faculty throughout COEHD have and will continue to be an advocate for social justice on campus and in the community. Faculty have created state-wide partnerships with K-12 public school institutions taking these vital discussions into community
classrooms. Our sights are aimed at growing the REGSS with more faculty and the college’s offerings of courses providing the necessary teachings for our ever-changing social landscape. To truly make change is a commitment both shared by the college and
university.
We realize that there is much work to be done to combat the systemic and deeply seeded issues embedded in our nation. COEHD will remain committed to fighting for social justice, equity, and inclusivity for our students, staff, faculty and all the communities
we serve.
