UTSA scholar, team encourage healthy living through vacation bible school program

Two important events bookend the Roadrunner academic experience: convocation and commencement. Of the two, commencement understandably gets more attention. We gather with students and their families at commencement to celebrate their accomplishments. I believe convocation is equally important because it marks the beginning of students’ relationship with UTSA. Sure, they’ve been through orientation. Maybe they’ve even met faculty at simulated class lectures, but it is at this ceremony where their real journey begins.  Convocation is their official induction into the Roadrunner family.


UTSA research suggests ‘vaping’ may not be as risk-free as it appears

According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 20 million U.S. adults or one in 10 have tried an e-cigarette or vaping device. Many people ‘vape,’ as the practice is commonly called, to soothe their nicotine cravings without a traditional cigarette’s harmful effects. Others are trying nicotine inhalation for the first time.


But is vaping harmless? Local researchers wanted to find out.

Participants needed for research study

Dr. Donovan Fogt is in need of hundreds of male and female students healthy enough to walk between the ages of 18 and 65 years old. He, and his research team, are conducting a study about how the body responds to conditions such as exercise, and what factors may contribute to heart disease. They are creating a large data repository to answer questions related to cardiovascular diseases. They will: collect information about your physical activity, health, depression and mood; collect samples of urine, saliva, and blood for testing hydration status and biomarkers associated with cardiovascular disease; measure your body's heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing in response to exercise, standing, and during a special breathing test; measure your level of physical capacity, strength and balance. The entire procedure will take approximately 4 hours of your time. You will a body composition (body fat %), waist-to-hip ration, and body mass index report for your participation. There is no monetary compensation. All procedures will take place at the UTSA Main Campus in the Integrative Cardiopulmonary and Autonomic Performance Laboratories (ICAPL) located in the Physical Education and Multidisciplinary Studies Buildings. Lindahl named blogger for TESOL International Association blog

Dr. Kristen Lindahl, assistant professor in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, was named the Teacher Education Blogger for the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) International Association. TESOL has 44,000 members and the blog received nearly 20,000 site visits per month. The blog, which has elementary, secondary, adult, and teacher education strands, can be found athttp://blog.tesol.org

Bilingual author speaks to pre-service teachers

During Summer Session II, Bilingual Author, Illustrator, and Middle School Teacher, Xavier Garza, spoke to future teachers and students in Dr. Rosalind Horowitz’s RDG 3803, Writing Development and Processes course about his writing career and empathy for and literacy education of adolescent writers. His works have been published by Arte Publico Press and supported by grants from City of Houston through The Cultural Arts Council of Houston. This presentation emanated from Dr. Horowitz’s research on Border Life and its impact on translingual, transcultural, and transformative discourses.
