navigating the academy
by Burke, Mack
Nice couple of papers from Dr. Alfred on navigating the academy- I am going to see if we can schedule her as a guest speaker in the Fall. She was in many ways a mentor for us at Texas A&M (although…as Dr. BP and Boon say- “I am the least diverse person out there….”). She is in higher ed admin, adult learning, and qualitative research. With all the caveats and understanding that no group speaks with one voice- most departments now are pretty “feminized” for a lack of a better word. But, you might go to a place that you are the first Hispanic, Black, etc. in a role in that particular or specific department or division or program…especially if you are portable- the demographics of every state and area is a bit different as well- each has their own unique history and settlement patterns…ranging from the Church of Latter Day Saints in Utah to European immigrant pioneers in Oregon, and perhaps have to navigate some culture specific issues.

Racial gaps in academics and disipline
by Burke, Mack
This one is being cited- lots of statistics- but, more evidence- of the connection between academics and disipline-makes the case for both the science of reading, PBIS, and evidence-based interventions that are culturally responsive important for addressing disparities.

We also found evidence that the association between the Black-White achievement gap and the Black-White discipline gap was attributable, in part, to the tight coupling of achievement and discipline for Black students in particular, who experience higher suspension rates in districts with larger achievement gaps and who experience higher achievement in districts that suspend them less frequently. Notably, this tight coupling of discipline and achievement was not observed for White students. This pattern indicates that the mechanisms connecting achievement and discipline (e.g., teacher biases, peer effects, feelings of belonging) are more salient for Black than White students.
