The Telos of Special Education in Supporting Students with Disabilities:
Science, Inclusion, Equity, and Justice
The aim of this presentation is to describe the 'Telos' or purpose of special education in the context of students with disabilities. Three key functions of special education
include: (a) research, (b) establishing a distinct support system, and (c) delivering specialized or "special" instruction. Within this presentation, we will present and discuss past and present issues and trends influencing special education. This will be
explored in the context of systems change, with a particular emphasis on the interconnected themes of science, inclusion, equity, and justice.
