Re: Project LEER - Listserv
by Eslami, Zohreh R.
Dear Mack and All,
Sorry for lack of presence in meetings and other activities during the last two weeks.
I am catching up with left behind work and will be attending the meetings to the extent possible.
It is great that I can access meeting notes and action items in case I could not be present in the meetings due to connection issues and being out of State until March 10.
I am dealing with both family issues and lack of good access/connections to the websites due to location.
Best

If I remember correctly- Francis and his group developed the TELPAS and many of the other accountability assessments used in Texas- likely one of the reasons they have such good psychometric properties. The question that we need to be asking- is the EL overlap with disability? And then- what does evidence- based practices look like for ELs with disabilities? What does special education look like for ELs with disabilities? What does inclusion look like for ELs with disabilities? What does positive behavior support look like for Els with disabilities with EBD, dyslexia, autism, deaf and hard of hearing, developmental and intellectual disabilities, etc. etc. etc- I am an EBD person- so most interested in the EBD/mental health/PBIS overlap- but others should ask the same questions depending on area.

This funding makes possible the creation of the Yellowstone Consortium of International Studies and Foreign Languages. It will serve as an academic hub in a region that, until now, has offered only limited opportunities for undergraduate students to pursue these fields of study. Beyond language, the grant will fund a global studies seminar on one of the five consortium members’ campuses each semester and finance faculty travel and professional development.

The new, streamlined Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) was designed for easier completion by directly pulling tax information from the IRS. However, released months later than usual, it has caused time constraints for students. Glitches, especially affecting parents without a Social Security number, could impact tens of thousands of eligible U.S. citizen students. Education advocates say there needs to be a stronger sense of urgency to resolve the issue, as some colleges award aid on a first-come, first-served basis.

This article features a conversation with the school’s coordinator for an EL program on how co-teaching works at her school, what ELs need from reading comprehension instruction, and what advice she has for other educators who might want to adopt the model.

Re: Project LEER - Listserv
by Burke, Mack
Thanks Rich-
Rich and I are friends with some of the people at UH- good to look at their Center on ELs also-
https://uh.edu/news-events/stories/july-2020/07012020-david-francis-engli...
https://www.cselcenter.org/
