Next week is a key date for the federal budget. If the budget is not approved before
Wednesday, there is a possibility that a government shutdown will occur.
Potential Impacts of a Shutdown
The vast majority of federal employees will not be permitted to work at all. That includes
being unable to check email or respond to phone messages.
Staying informed. Federal agencies will release updates on their shutdown procedures.
Important links for current updates will be provided.
What We Can Do Now to Prepare
There are steps universities can take in advance of a potential shutdown that would begin
on October 1:
* Post-Award: Prepare prior approval requests and submit early. Institutions should
evaluate federally funded grants set to expire within the next several months and consider
plans to ensure the research can proceed with minimal disruptions until grant renewals
begin again.
* Pre-Award: Stick to published grant submissions and nominations timelines, as some
submission portals may remain active during a shutdown.
If a shutdown does occur, we will inform you of procedures and resources. A formal
communication channel will be provided to the research community.
Thank you for your attention to the evolving information as you support the research
activities in your assigned colleges, units, centers, and institutes.
