New Employee Welcome: Graduate Assistant Team

They each had their first days earlier in May and have attended in-depth training with the Advising Administration these past few weeks. She is currently a UTSA graduate student aspiring to earn her Master's in Communication. During undergrad, she was actively involved on campus by being a part of different organizations, being a student tour guide, ambassador, orientation leader, and a work study for the Admissions Office. She found true passion for working in an academic setting and helping students throughout their college journey. Kyra enjoys attending music festivals, working out, eating sushi, going out to boba shops, organizing, and spending time with family and friends. She is very grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of the Academic Advising Team and looks forward to learning more in how she can help support and guide students! [cid:image004.jpg@01D7507D.32961670] Meet Sarah Duran Sarah Duran is a San Antonio native who joined the UTSA community last year as a Master of Social Work Student. Sarah previously received her bachelor's degree in political science from Trinity University, where she worked also worked for the university's counseling services office. While working with counseling services, she was able to gain experience assisting students and staff in finding the resources they needed. In her spare time, Sarah enjoys reading, watching tv, knitting, and (most of all) spending time with her two dogs. Sarah is passionate about working with people, and is looking forward to being a part of the Academic Advising Team where she can help support students as they navigate this important time in their lives. [cid:image006.jpg@01D7507D.32961670] Meet Tomás Soriano Jimenez Tomás hails from the port city of Tampico, Mexico. He completed his undergraduate degree in Economics at Brigham Young University in Utah. He has also completed graduate coursework in Latin American literature, computer science, and geoinformatics. Currently, Tomás is applying to the information technology master's program at UTSA. In past lives he has worked as a tech support specialist with UTS, Spanish teacher, and network operations engineer. Personal interests include poetry, philosophy, and futbol. Tomás enjoys playing with his daughter, visiting museums, and going on walks. Have a wonderful week! Honors Opportunities for All Students: College-based Honors Programs The Honors College collaborates with UTSA's academic colleges to additionally offer Honors programs. Our flexible curriculum allows college-based Honors programs to count for three Honors experience requirements, and it puts students on the track to graduate as an Honors College student with distinction. Last week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that the March 2020 guidelines for F-1 students will remain the same for AY 2021-22. Usually, students who hold F-1 visas, (90% of our international students), can only be enrolled in one online course to maintain their visa status. The March 2020 guidelines remaining in place are different and include the following: 1. Students on F-1 visa, who started on or before spring 2020, can take a full load of courses online, without risking their visa status 2. Students on F-1 visa, who were new and initial F-1 student on or after summer 2020, will need to take at least one 3-credit course with in-person instruction. *Please note that transfer students and change of level students are not considered new and initial students for F-1 purposes and may take a full load of online courses. This means that about 40% or 350 of our international students may need to adjust their schedules. During AY 2020-21 we provided you a list of the impacted students so that you could better support them given the limited number of in-person courses that were offered. With a resumption of normal campus life including many courses offered in person for AY 2021-22, we will not provide these lists. Nonetheless, International Services will communicate directly with the students and ensure they are aware of these guidelines. Academic advisors and GARs will also be able to assist with these requirements and resolve most issues. Undergraduate international students will be able to get support from the Graduation Help Desk if their academic advisors are unable to help. My name is Aricelda Calderon and I was born and raised in San Antonio, TX. I am an alumna of Texas State University with a B.A. in English and soon to be M.A. in Medieval Literature. He graduated from Southwestern University with a BA in Computational Mathematics, a (planned) minor in German and an (accidental) minor in Theatre - short story for another time. Ben fell in love with his role in Residence Life as a Resident Assistant, the positive impact he had on students, and decided to pursue Higher Education as his career. Ben worked as a Resident Director in Alabama for 4.5 years, during which he earned his M.Ed in Higher Education Administration from Northeastern University. Ben is joining UTSA after working 2.5 years as a Residence Director at Texas State University. The second-oldest of four, Ben enjoys spending time with his family - loves being a new uncle and eagerly awaiting all the Spiderman references he will be able to make as "Uncle Ben" -, playing video games, board games, and acting when given the opportunity. Who knows? You may see him up on stage one summer at a local theatre. Fun fact: Ben can grow a dapper mustache, which he did when he was cast as Hercule Poirot in Agatha Christie's Black Coffee. [cid:image006.jpg@01D746ED.82EA0FD0] Meet Cristian Baeza Academic Advising Unit: Life & Health Sciences Kudoboard for Cristian: https://utsaadvising.kudoboard.com/boards/JYO2LpxZ/cristianbaeza Cristian Baeza (He/Him/His/Él) was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. As a young student affairs professional and first-generation Mexican-American college student, he has first-hand witnessed and experienced the challenges that students from underrepresented identities often faced within higher education. Thus, he is passionate and finds strength in mentoring, advising, and counseling students from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds. He completed his B.A. in Human Development and Learning from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 2019. During his time at UIC, he became a brother of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc., conducted research around the impact of academic support programs, studied abroad in Amsterdam, and became a co-founder of the UIC Latinx Heritage Month. Fast-forward, he recently concluded his M.S.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) from Northern Illinois University where he was also given the opportunity to form part of the Chi Sigma Alpha Student Affairs Honor Society. In addition, he served as the Advising and Recruitment Graduate Assistant for the Department of Counseling and Higher Education (CAHE) at NIU. All in all, Cristian is excited to be at UTSA and is ready to soak in all the sun that San Antonio has to offer! Fun facts: Cristian once considered pursuing a B.A. in Theatre and Performance as a result of him growing up participating in plays, musicals, and dance groups. He loves chocolate, his favorite season is fall, and he enjoys baking on his free time!
