Leadership Changes and Reminders for MLL Department
by advising@lists.it.utsa.edu
Good Morning!
I hope you're having a great Friday! As the Modern Languages and Literatures (MLL) department liaison, I'd like to provide you with a few updates and reminders.
I'm excited to inform you that the department has made some leadership changes. Dr. Whitney Chappell Whitney.Chappell(a)utsa.edu<mailto:Whitney.Chappell@utsa.edu> has been appointed as the New Department Chair, and Dr. Michael Rushforth Michael.Rushforth(a)utsa.edu<mailto:Michael.Rushforth@utsa.edu> will continue to serve as the Assistant Department Chair. Moving forward, if you have any substitution or petition requests or need assistance with study abroad credit evaluations, please email both Dr. Chappell and Dr. Rushforth.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to share some additional information about the Spanish Heritage courses. The Heritage sections of SPN 1014: Elementary Spanish I are core classes and fulfill the 040: Language, Philosophy, Culture requirement. For more details, you can find an FAQ document attached.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about courses or anything related to the MLL department. I'm here to assist!
Have a great weekend,
Anna

Degree Works Upper-division Hours Adjustment
by advising@lists.it.utsa.edu
Hello All,
Please review the information below about a recent adjustment to the Degree Works upper-division hours calculation.
The 39 upper-level hours calculation previously looked for any course (UTSA or transfer) that was numbered from 3000-4999 or that had the UPPR attribute in SHATRNS (see below from the Diagnostics Report).
[cid:image002.jpg@01D9D5C7.B8B1D290]
We noticed a few instances of transfer courses incorrectly applying to the calculation based on the course number from another institution. In the example below, MATH 03150 was "read" as MATH 3150 (the leading zero didn't matter). This course was not upper-level credit at the transfer institution and was not tagged UPPR in SHATRNS, so it should not have counted toward the upper-level hours requirement.
[cid:image004.jpg@01D9D5C7.B8B1D290]
Degree Works has been adjusted to only include transfer courses if they have the UPPR tag in SHATRNS, regardless of whether or not the course is numbered from 3000-4999 (see the adjustment in Diagnostic below). Only UTSA courses numbered from 3000-4999 will automatically be applied to this requirement based on the course number alone.
As always, if an adjustment is needed to a transfer course, such as to tag it with the UPPR attribute to designate it as upper-level credit, please submit the course information through the Enrollment Operations Processing Request Form<https://www.utsa.edu/enrollment/facultystaff/admissions/>.

Honors News:
Honors College has a new Counselor, Jennifer Riddick! Jennifer will be our liaison for the following colleges: COLFA, HCAP, and COEHD. She will also be our Thesis Coordinator. Please help us welcome Jennifer to UTSA!
[C3CAD0FE]
Hello! My name is Jennifer Riddick, and I am thrilled to serve as one of the Honors Academic Counselors at UTSA. My mission is to help students craft their own unique experiential learning experience, create safe spaces to help students discover their passions, and focus on assisting students in accomplishing all components of the SPICE learning outcomes.
I was born and raised in the small town of Vacaville, California. I received my B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology in 2020 from Southern Oregon University and my M.A. in Postsecondary Educational Leadership in 2023 from San Diego State University. My professional experience has centered around higher education and student affairs for the past five years, and I have worked in various institutions across California and Oregon. My passions include student success, retention, leadership, career development, and service learning.
In my free time, I love to dance, go to the theater, travel, discover new restaurants for my food blog, and hang out with my friends and family. Some fun facts about me are that I am an Avatar the Last Airbender fanatic, I love reality TV (Especially the Bachelorette and Say Yes to the Dress), and I’ve been a dance teacher for eight years, training in the styles of tap, jazz, hip hop, and musical theater.
Honors Opportunities for All Students:
The Office of Nationally Competitive Awards supports ALL UTSA students! While the office is housed in the Honors College, the awards & advising are open to all students. Check out the website<https://honors.utsa.edu/onca/> for more information on the many scholarship and fellowship opportunities, including featured awards for graduate study, employment following graduation, awards for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, study abroad, research abroad, and foreign language studies. Information sessions are held throughout the year and can be found on the website<https://honors.utsa.edu/onca/> as well as Rowdylink<https://utsa.campuslabs.com/engage/>.
Highlighted Benefit for Honors College Members:
Costa Rica Bound! This summer, the Honors College will travel to Rancho Margot<https://www.ranchomargot.com/>, where students spend one week at an off-the-grid farm learning about ecology, sustainability, and mindfulness. This trip is tied to a fall Honors course, where students put into practice the activities they engaged in, in Costa Rica with San Antonio community entities (such as local community gardens, learning about watershed processes at Confluence Park, and much more!). This program is open to any major and includes spaces for our first-year students who are just starting their time at UTSA. The program counts as an Engaged Living experience in the Honors curriculum. Learn more about the program on our website<https://honors.utsa.edu/programs/costa-rica.html>.
