The Center for Military Families at the UTSA – Downtown Campus would like you to join us
in Turning San Antonio Purple on Friday, April 13th in honor of Texas and San Antonio
proclaiming April the month of the military child and declaring that day Purple UP! For
Military Kids Day. Attached are the proclamations from both Governor Abbott and Mayor
Nirenberg as well as this month’s newsletter from the Military Child Education Program.
Feel free to print and post in your areas and/or share via e-mail with others.
We would like to encourage everyone to wear purple that day to show support for military
children! Below are ideas from the JBSA Military Child Education School Liaison Offices
on how you can show your support for military children on April 13th. We plan to tie
purple ribbons on campus to honor and show appreciation to military children for all their
strength and sacrifices. Please join us in any way you can... Get Your Purple On!

and Patriot's Express - Mar/Apr Edition - Let's Turn San Antonio Purple!

The time has come to honor our youngest heroes! The military child serves too - they are
expected to support the mission by understanding the needs of the military when a parent
deploys, they receive permanent change of station orders to relocate and when the military
member has to put service before their families' needs. Since 1986, April has been
declared the Month of the Military Child (MOMC) to recognize the commitment, contributions
and sacrifices of military children. Gov. Abbott has signed a MOMC Proclamation for Texas
(attached) for all to display proudly and bring awareness to our kids unique challenges.
PurpleUp! For Military Kids Day has been declared for Texas as April 13, 2018. We are
asking schools, youth organizations, businesses and community partners to PurpleUp! so
that military youth actually SEE the support in their communities. You can wear purple,
tie a purple ribbon, post signs/banners, wear purple wrist bands basically anything that
shows your support. We ask that if districts/campuses/businesses share on Social Media
activities and celebrations (even if it’s just wearing purple)- please tag our office -

Texas is proud to be home to Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, National
Guard and Reserve families and the second largest state in the US with military dependents

The March/April Patriot's Express will highlight MOMC, PurpleUp! as well as other
events that will help celebrate these youth!
