Good afternoon academic advising team,
I wanted to ensure the entire advising community was aware that BIO 3522 (Biochemistry
Lab) and BIO 3822 (Cell Biology Lab) are being offered for the last time this summer.
Going forward, students can take BIO 3362 (Molecular Biochemistry Lab) to replace BIO 3522
if needed. Credit cannot be earned for BIO 3362 and any one of the following, however: BIO
3522, BIO 3822, or BME 3114 (Cellular Biology for Biomedical Engineering).
BIO 3362. Molecular Biochemistry Laboratory. (1-4) 2 Credit Hours.
Prerequisites: BIO
2362<https://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=BIO%202362>, CHE
1103<https://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=CHE%201103>, and completion or concurrent
enrollment in MAT
1093<https://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=MAT%201093> or higher. A
study of the microscopic, biochemical and molecular techniques used to investigate
biochemical reactions and the structure and function of proteins in cells and tissues.
Techniques will include; protein extraction, protein characterization, enzyme kinetics,
chromatography, western blotting, Immunofluorescence and bioinformatics. (Credit cannot be
earned for both BIO
3362<https://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=BIO%203362> and any of
the following: BIO
3522<https://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=BIO%203522>, BIO
3822<https://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=BIO%203822>, or BME
3114<https://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=BME%203114>.) Generally offered: Fall,
Spring, Summer. Differential Tuition: $100. Course Fees: IUB1 $10; L001 $30.
For example, if you have a student who wants to take BIO 3362, but they already have
credit for BIO 3822, they would be not be able to earn credit.
In addition, there are some changes to the availability for two chemistry courses. CHE
3464 (Descriptive Inorganic Chemistry) used to be offered in both the Fall and Spring
terms. This course will be offered in the spring term only, so the three sections listed
in the schedule of classes for fall 2021 will not be released for registration. CHE 3854
(Basic Biophysical Chemistry) historically was offered in the spring terms only, but it
was offered in Fall 2020, and it’s offered in Fall 2021. Going forward, this course will
only be offered in the fall.
PHY 4833 (Molecular Biophysics) used to be offered in the spring terms only, but it’ll
will be offered in the fall term for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Physics Department
is unsure the availability for the course beyond that.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions at
heather.shattuck@utsa.edu<mailto:heather.shattuck@utsa.edu>. Erika Olvera and I
serve as the College of Science training leads and liaison for the Department of Biology
and Chemistry in the Life and Health Sciences Advising unit, and we’re happy to work with
you regarding any questions you may have.
Take care,
Heather
