Greetings,
It was brought to my attention that advisors are recommending MAT 1033 for students
changing to PRB.
Please do not recommend MAT 1033 to students changing to PRB. ****the MAT 1033 for fall 18
is reserved for students in the 2017/2018 catalog that did not pass the MAT 1033
previously.
The two new math courses are MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business, and MAT 1133 Calculus for
Business. MAT 1133 is the Gateway course.
If the student transfers in MAT 1214 Calculus then the student is considered complete in
both MAT 1053 and MAT 1133.
If the student transfers in MAT 1023, MAT 1073 with a C- or better the student may
register in MAT 1133.
Course descriptions:
MAT 1053. Mathematics for Business. (3-0) 3 Credit Hours. (TCCN =MATH 1324)
Prerequisite: Satisfactory performance on a placement examination. This course is designed
to prepare the student for MAT 1133 Calculus for Business. Topics include the application
of common algebraic functions, including polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and
rational,to problems in business, economics, statistics, finance, and accounting. The
applications include mathematics of finance, including simple and compound interest and
annuities; systems of linear equations; matrices;linear programming; and probability,
including expected value. May apply toward the Core Curriculum requirement in Mathematics.
(Credit canbe earned for only one of the following: MAT 1023, MAT 1033, MAT1053, MAT 1063,
or MAT 1073.) Generally offered: Fall, Spring, Summer.
MAT 1133. Calculus for Business. (3-0) 3 Credit Hours. (TCCN =MATH 1325)
Prerequisite: MAT 1053 with a grade of "C-" or better, or an equivalent course,
or satisfactory performance on a placement examination. This course is the basic study of
limits and continuity, differentiation of single and multivariable functions, optimization
and graphing, and integration of elementary, single variable functions, with an emphasis
on applications in business and economics. May apply toward the Core Curriculum
requirement in Mathematics. (Credit cannot be earned for both MAT 1033and MAT 1133.)
Generally offered: Fall, Spring, Summer.
