Dear Roadrunner Community, Since arriving at UTSA last month I have spent much of my time on a listening tour, visiting with a broad cross-section of faculty, staff and students. I’ve already learned so much about this extraordinary institution and the opportunities before us. I’ve also had the chance to review the results of both the faculty/staff<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http... and student <https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fprovost.... diversity surveys conducted by the Provost’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council last year. The surveys provided a very helpful first step to understanding where we are succeeding as an institution, and where we have more work to do. Overall, I believe they point to the many benefits that will come from efforts to increase our collective cultural intelligence as a learning community. Next week President Eighmy will officially announce a new President’s Initiative on Inclusive Excellence, which will provide a framework for our first steps. It will include future planning for a comprehensive campus climate survey that will allow us to gather information on multiple dimensions within the inclusive excellence spectrum, as well as measure our progress with peer universities in a systemic way. Understanding how we’re doing in a quantitative sense is important, but just as important is hearing from the many individual voices that make up the fabric of this community. As such, I’m happy to announce my first round of small group dialogue sessions for faculty and staff. If you have thoughts, experiences or ideas on the topic of inclusive excellence at UTSA, I hope you will consider signing up for one of these casual discussions. Each will be limited to 25 participants. If they prove to be popular, I will offer more of these in the months to come.
